CHRISTIAN CENERAL'S OFFENSIVE STARTS.
NORTHERNERS AWAIT NIANGTSEKWAN SUCCESS.
FRONTIER PASS TO SHANSI ·
IMPREGNABLE.
In spite of some contradictory reports, it is evident that the Fengtirnese have captured Tsingting, near the Chihli-Shanai border. Northern activity in other zones appears to be held more or less in suspense until this success on the Taingting-Taiyden Railway, is consummated. The Northerners would no doubt like to push through the mountains to Taiyuen, the capital of Shanai,, a move which would cripple the Shanai opposition entirely.
The only way into Shansi in the Taingting region is through the Niangtaekwen Pass, which is almost impassible so long as an enemy holds the surrounding mountains. Added to this, it is reported that the pass is strongly fortified.
The immediate intention of the Northerners is to drive the Shansi forces into the Niangtaekwan Pass and to bottle them up there. This will both safeguard the Fengtien lines of communica- tions and release a certain number of troops for other activities.
The Christian General has ordered the commencement of his general offensive and intends "to attack Tamingfu in Southern Chibli. A message from Bauchow to the vernacular papers states' that the Fengtienese in Southern Chikli are very apprehensive of this attack, fearing for the safety of their communications, and ars making efforts to counteract it.

Thero is a nice fat lawyer, Ots Harlan, who thinks the best soin- tion would be a temporary parting, and he introduces Laura to the divorce court. Here comes a scene at once amazing, incredible and wholly delightful. In the judge's chair is another fat and pleasan: gentleman, Burr McIntosh, and for hia benefit Laura performs char- ades, to prove her husband's cruelty towards her. "From the day we married," she says, "he started gambling." She deals the imaginary cards, stakes, examines her hand and works the judge up into a considerable state of excite ment.
