NORMAL CARGO RETURNS.

ONLY EIGHT DEPARTURES.

Sixteen arrivals and eight depar tures were recorded at the Harbour Offee yesterday for the period end ing at an, and the general freights for this port increased slightly. British vessels carried a fnir percentage of the cargo re turus. Through freights were very good, with a fair increase on the previous day's figures.

The total amount of merchandise discharged for Hong Kong amount ed to 13,673 tons, and Ave British vessels contributed 8,00 tons. The two best returns were from Japanese and a British vessels. The s.s. Ginsen Mary arriving from Wakamatsu and Moji discharged 2,317 tons of cement, while the 3. Haldia (British) had 2,300 tons of rice from Saigon.

AN UNSUCCESSFUL CHARGE.

The adjourned case against the master and owner of the ae. Chung On was resumed before Commander J B. Nevill at the Marine Court yesterday morning. Boarding Officer C. Thompson prosecuted while Mr. Loseby appeared for the de fendants. The charge against the defendants way that of leaving the port with an excess number of passengers. Mr. Löseby pointed out to his Worship that the ship's Licence permitted the vessel to carry up to 14 passengers, while the number of passengers stated to be an board was only 400. The ship carried very little cargo in the main deck except for a few mail bags, and Mr. Loseby mentioned that in auch circumstances there was really no ease against the defendants. The Magistrate agreed with Mr. Loeby and dismissed the case. -
