HUNGRY CROWDS OF MOSCOW.
TROTSKY'S PROPHECY
.FULFILLED.
SOVIET OFFICIALS PANICKY.
[By Di. EboviRD LUBOFF," The Well-known Authority on Russia.].
If the news of Moccow's famine and long, hungry and freezing queues ever reaches Trotsky in his exile in Turkestan he will he pleased to see that his prophecy has been fulfilled; for one of the chief reasons for his fall from grace was the emphasis he laid on the increasing length of the Moscow queues and his prophecy that con ditions in the New Year, would grOW WOTE,
But Moscow is used to hungry queues; they have been her for ever since the Bolsheviks became her masters and established the ystem of State trading. To day the queues are longer and the wait ing crowds of women and children are hungrier and colder, but the system, ie the mme. Last year, it is estimated by Soviet stadieticians, the housewife had to wait in vari ous shopping quercy on an average three hours a day; to-day she waits six
but the tragedy is not in the waiting, unpleasant as it is. With wages equalling'a purchasing power of 135. Ilda week (Pravda, November 17th) and with prices some 130 per cent, above their pre- war level, the Moscow worker's wife änds shopping, even were there are no queues, à difficult and painful process,
Hoecow, is hungry, not only be cause there is not enough food to go round, but because the majority of the population cannot afford to pay the prices charged. I have succeeded in obtaining the retail prices in Moscow on the eve of the present panic. A pound of white bread at the fixed price is 24d. This is twice ne much as before the war--and that in a country that was called the granary of the world. Sugar produced in the nationalised refineries from cheap beet is retail- ed by the State shops at 8d. per th, or three times as much as br fore the war. Egge and butter, which are being exported in large quantities, fetch 13d each and le.
b. Even frozen beef is 1s. ad, per, or three times as much aa in 1913. These prices are lower than those ruling here; but as wages are only about a third as high, the British worker's lat is Immeasurably happier. A comman suit of clothes made in the Seriat, tailoring factory costs £6, and on overcoat of the same quality £8.
From various figures cited in the Irvesty and the Pravda I have ben alle to compare the budger of a. Russian worker with that of his prototype in England and I find
that, allowing for Russian condi- tions, the Russian worker lives on of the British standard.

The revolt not directed against the rector, the Rev. J. P. Harrison, who, in fact, is unknown to many of the parishioners, the majority of whom even express sympathy for
him.
After 600 Years.
The trouble has arisen because when a few weeks ago the last rec- tor accepted another living, the benefice of Southleigh, under an Order in Council made in 1994, ie came united automatically to that of Northleigh two or three miles away. Southleigh untik then had had a rector of its own for 600 years, and the people are seemingly resolute in their intention not to enter the doors of their church again until the parish is restored to its former independence.
Although the population have abandoned the parish church, they have, not became non-churchgoera They go to churches five at Bix miles away motor-ccaches oro vided free of charge by Miss Edanonda, who lives at Wiscomor Park, a beautiful estate, which has a notice ate of its entrances warning servants who do not close the gates that they are liable to a fine of a shilling.

THE PRINCE SETS A FASHION. TURNED-UP TROUSERS WITH MORNING COAT.
Lesbox. March 3rd. The Prince of Wales has once "gain set a fashion in men's dress. At the Mansion House meeting in aid of the Earl Haig Memorial Fund, he was the only man on the platform who, with his morning coat, had turned-up bottoms to his trousers, which were of a small check pattern.
Such trousers with morning coat
may well become the fashion, for the Prince has given a similar lead

One of the best-known tailors in the West End said to a Daily Mail reporter: "I have never seen or heard of turn-ups' with morning dress. Up to now they have been regarded as wrong. But somebody
