There has been considerable further trouble between Chinese and Japanese in Amoy. It appears from ceports in the vernacu Iar press that Japanese marines, acting as escort to a lighter, ar- rested eight Chinese pickets and tore their Kuomintang dags. This was the signal for a big disturbance among the Chinese. The amilitary authorities acted however with great promptness and immediately proclaimed martial law. After negotiations the Jap- anese, Naval Authorities released the pickets.

The Northerners wish the Nationalists to co-operate with them in a note to the Powers dealing with the Tarif question. It is their idea that a note should be sent simultaneously from Peking and Nanking Hitherto the Southerners have not agreed. THE AMOY INCIDENT,
