Mr. E. Ralphs, Inspector of English Schools, presided over the annual prize distribution of the Wah Yan College which was held in the Queen's Theatre yesterday morning. Lady Shou-son Chow" presented the prizes and among others on the platform were Sir Shou-son Chow, Mr. Ralphs, Father Finn and Father Neary, S.J., Mr. Y. P. Law, the Inspector of Chinese Schools, Mr. EH.. Williams, Assistant Secretary for Chinese Affairs, Mr. Lim Hor Lam, the Headmaster, Mr. Chow Cheng Lam, B.A., the Head- master of the Kowloon Branch, and Mr. Lui Sun Ui, B.Sc.. the * Assistant Headmaster of the Wah Yan College, and Mr. Peter Tani,

China's Demand For Education. The demand for English education in the China of to-day is wide. spread and irresistible, and school for the teaching of English ar springing up like mushroom throughout the country. But ar the eager students who flock t them lured by a mirage farther an farther into the desert of disillu sionment 1. We do not think so. I is our belief that the future educat ed class of the Chinese people wil be bilingual. Whatever others may say to the contrary, we hold to the opinion that the Chinese will never acquire the advantages of Westers civilisation except through the stu dents, who have gone to the

There were several additions to the staff during the year including two of our past pupils, Messrs. Chan Wai Ming and Kwan Man Wai. Mr. W. A. Youngsaye, B.A. our science master, Me. Li Po se M.Sc., and erstwhile professor Chinese history and literaturs in various Chinese universities, who joined us to take charge "of the Chinese studies, Mina M. D. SINGAPORE JUDGE CRITICISES THE LAW

A 19-year old Chinese youth whe was convicted of holding up an other Chinese with a knife and rob- bing him of 38.40 was sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and ten stokes of the "cat" at the Singapore Assizes.
Mr. Justice Denne, the presiding | judge, criticised the severity of the minimum sentence for this offence. "This maa has stolen 88.40 und I cannot sentence him to less than seven years," he said "Such sen tences are absurd."
