MARRIAGE CUSTOMS IN CHINA

HOW MATCHES ARE DECIDED

DAUGHTERS A LOSING PROPOSITION.

[BY CLO]:

Marriage entoms vary in different parts of China, but throughout the length and breadth of this country it has always been held that daughters are losing propositions. This is obviouelly true to anyone cognisant with the fact that in China matrimony a distinct gain to the man Hs need spend only a small sum of money, and what his wife should bring to his household would amply compensate.

In certain parts of China, a brido continues to be supported. by her parents for three years or more after marriage, In Hong. Kong this custom is observed duly to the extent of a month or so. It depends materially on the wealth of her parents. The path of a Chiness bride is certainly not strewn with roses and she has to pass through a grueling time during the first three daye of her married life.

Happily the ao customs" are now not very rigidly obsérved. “ The educated and westernised Chinese have totally discarded tha flowery sedan chair" and its attendant ceremonies. In its place "Man Ming Kit Fung" has come to stay. This is a seim-foreign ceremony, which can be truly regarded as a great boon to Chinese ladies.
