"SILK, SHAWLS AND JADE.

ADVICE TO OUR VISITORS OF THE "FRANCONIA."

The traveller, entering a new port, experiences the difficulty of want of knowledge of the best shops in which to purchase those precious momentoes of his or her voyage. There is so much to see and do in the course of a few hours, that the visitors is often tempted by the first shop, and very often regret, when, too late, that she has not gone farther afield.

I have, therefore, on this page tried to give you some indica tion of the type of goods which you can find at the various shops mentioned, and can assure you that you will receive courteous treatment and a square deal at all of them.

SHOES.

MADAME SARRAULT's sate in still in progress and really the goods offered are amazingly cheap. By the time you read this a consign- ment of summer hats, about which. I had a few most tempting hints, should, have arrived.

LANE, CRAWFORD's first summer shoes have arrived, and are an in- teresting collection. The newest features are the tie-on-the-instep models and the tan canvas shoes for summer wear. There seem to be practically no white shoes. Shapes vary, there are moderately long and short vamped shoes; but none THE GRAND SILK STORE.

of them are cut out quite deeply at the instep as last year. Heels Pohoomu Brothers, the Grand run from quite high Spanish Silk Store, which is at the corner spike, to a "Lady Betty" low heel just opposite the "Queen's" Cinema of only about half an inch, but, a in Queen's Road Central, is, I below Louis heel without much waist lieve, the oldest Silk Store in the seems to be the most general. Some ! of the canvas shoes are made in a two colour effect with a vamp of flowered canvas and the rest plain caramel colour; often they are bound and lightly strapped with kid. Others are made of cotton or silk brocade in tones of beige or caramel but their more elaborate materials are only used for shoes of very simple cut. One very at- tractive model is made in a pastel blue and beige brocade which would be particularly good with a flowery voile frock.

The Pioneer Silk Store which you will find in Queen's Road Central pride themselves on having silka of every shade known to the dyers. Colony.

There are also a good many examples of plain caramel, beige or grey patent kid; these have either a moderate or quite low heel. Few evening shoes have ar- rived yet but I saw one very charm- ing model in black satin made to tie on the instep, and very lightly embroidered with silver thread on the straps.

OLD CANTON BLACKWOOD.

A NEW DEPARTURE IN A

EUROPEAN STORE.

Lane, Crawford's window has been attracting a good deal of at- tention this week for "one section of it is filled with really beautiful pieces of, blackwood. It is a new departure for this shop and "one which has received a very warm welcome from the regular cus- tomers. For Lane, Crawford's stands for solidity and worth, and many of us feel just a trifle incom-- petent in the choice of blackwood. But it needs no elever salesman. ship to persuade one that the furni ture displayed in Lane, Crawford's oriental department is genuine and good. The weight and solidity of the wood, the excellence of the joinery and above all perhaps the perfection of form and ornament attest that here is furniture which which will not fall apart in the hot season: There are marriage chests, chow tabes, and stools, DC. casional tables of all sorts and sizes and each piece seems more desirable than the last. Of the eight, big lanterns with painted silk panels which I saw on Monday only two were left on Wednesday. The difference lies in the fact that the dancing coat has a fringe at the hem and on the ends of the long sleeves, and is generally printed in bright colours. Many of you may be interested to take home Chinese garments such as are worn to day. With this idea the ̈ ̈“ Pioneer " ́has had a large stock of both the long cant dress and the pyjama style, made up with a wider cut, in all sorts of silks using particularly those patterns and colours most pleasing to West- ern taste.
