We have been regated lately, with a series of Wellsian prophesies; they came from all parts of the world, now from Italy, now from Germany, and, most recently of all, from U.S.A., and they promised a more complete subjection of the Atlantic. The announcement of the formation of the new Trans-

oceanie Corporation in New York was followed in due course by Inore fairy-tales of science-liners which will cross the Atlantic in four days and carry aeroplanes for people who are really in a hurry and want

to orcas in a short week-end. There

has been talk of ambitious plan-

At least the subject is in the air. The question is whether it in any- where else. It is perhaps signifi cant that in the inst fifteen (or even twenty) years, the speed of Ablantic liners has remained fairly constant. It has been suggested that the economic limit of speed (or, using the chemist's metaphor, one might say "the saturation patint") was reached before the wor. It is true that in the mean- time marine engineering has been making extraordinary advances. When, sixteen years ago, H.M.S Swift was launched, she was pro- February 25th....6.49 s.m. bably the fastest ship, afloat. She was almost literally built round her engines; she was a sort of per- sonification of speed. It was said that there was never a ship bui't like that before and that there will probably never be another.

The Three Factors. The virtues of destroyer and thor of a liner are, however, aot quite the came. The builder of liner has to consider comfort, economy, and speed in that order. And it is believed that the English liners of the present day, with speed of from 20 to 23 krots, have attained something like the ideai combination of those three quali ties.
