THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24th, 1928.

HONG KONG HORTICULTURAL

SOCIETY'S SHOW!

VERY GOOD QUALITY AND FAIR NUMBER OF EXHIBITS.

FULL LIST OF AWARDS.

We may congratulate ourselves that this show has been a accese. Although the exhibits are not so many as in times past, what is lacking in numbers has been made up for by the very high standard of the exhibits." This was the comment made by the President of the Hong Kong Horticultural Society on the dcension of the annual flower and vegetable show yesterday.

The President's claim was very well justified, as all who visited the Show were agreed. The weather has not been too kind to horticulturists and one wondered how they had managed to pro duce such excellent results. The Show ras certainly a success looked at from the standpoints of attendance and quality of exhibits..

j

As usual the exhibits were staged in specially erected matsheds at Volunteer Headquarters, and they made a very effective blaze of colour...

During the afternoon, H.E., the Governor (Sir Cecil Clementi, K.C.M.G.) and Lady Clementi visited the Shaw and her Ladyship presented the prizes and 'trophies to the successful exhibitors as five o'clock. During the afternoon the hand' of the 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers played an excellent programme of music. under the baton of Mr. W. H. Fitz-Earle. "A.R.C.M. (Bandmaster).

At the prize distribution, the President angounced that there had been an increase in membership of the Society, but he appealed for stil further members.

A departure was made from the custom of past years in the matter of the date of the show. It has frequently happened that a long series of depressing fogs, and un- ess days has epoiled much of the earlier work on flowers and vege tabies, and in view of this it was! decided to hoki the show earlier this year. The result wue at: that could be desired. Yesterday proved a warm day, with plenty of sun shine and a large mumber of visi tors, were present between the hours cf3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Further, the exhibits were of a very high stan- dard, the flowers, and plants being particularly pleasing..

It was disappointing that the entries should have dropped so much as compared with previous shows, but this was perhaps com- pensated for by

standard the reached. The judges had no casy Laak in making their final selections, so keen was competition in all Eections.

There were over 200 exhibite from the Peak, and about 175 from other districts in the pot plant section, while there was about an equal number of vegetables. Entries for cut flower section from the Lower Levels.

were disappointing, but sweet peas from the Peak were noticeable for their splendid quality..
