EXILED TO SNOWY STEPPES.
CHAT BEFORE MIS DEPARTURE.
LONDON, Jan 18th, Trotsky, who with the late Lenin founded Bolshevism and was for
years 'one' of the stalwarts of the Soviet, is now on his way to exile on the snowy Steppes of Russian Turkestan, one of the dreariest and loneliest spots in the world.
His departure is reported by Dr. Paul Scheffer, the Moscow corres pondent of the Berliner Tageblatt, who states that the former Bolshe vist. Commissar of War left Mos- cow as Monday night.
He is being deported because hr dared to form an Opposition to the Bolshevist Government. Other notorious Bolshevist former Com missars who joined him in Opposi- tion are also being exiled-cach to separate equally inaccessible and dreary

Trotsky talked of the prospects of revolution in Europe. He re- called that in 1923 the revolution ary waves rose to an appreciable. bright, above all in Germany, but since then they have sunk gradual

CHANGE IN SPEAKERSHIP.
MR. WHITLEY'S LAST PARLIAMENT.
LONDON, Jan. 21th. One of the possibilities of the new session of Parliament which 31.P.'s aro discussing is a change in the Speakerchip of the House of Com mons. It is understood that Mr. Whitley regards this as his laat Parliament. as heavy work has severely tried his health.
The coming ecasion is likely to be the last session of the Parliament olected in 1024 and if the new Parlia ment is to bavo a new Speaker, it is fairly certain that he would be chosen by the old House and not the new one, as it is now the estali- lished practice to eclect the new Speaker towards the close of Par tament and not at the beginning.

ing frescoca
American cinema audiences, says Mr. Eberson, have not taken to kindly to the great cinema structures built in record years They are frightened by so much magnificence, and we are trying to strike an architectural note that is more intimate and more artistic
than the prevailing note of pomp and glitter, which ceases to attract when it has lost its curiosity valise
"Buying Culture."
"The American public," he add- is so wealthy that it buy's ed. culture recklessly thinking that an artistic pomersion is the same thing as the possession of artistic sen- sibility, but its beginning to understand what, culture really means, and during the next few years it will probably make great strides in artistic development.
"Lo the meantime the architect must hasten slowly. The effect of u rest-room copied faithfully from a Touraine chatenu is ruized if the loungers insist on putting their feet on the chairs."
Mr. Eherson gave me the impres sion that some American picture goers brought the wrong atmos- phere to his beatiful theatres.
