a

His Excellency described the Portuguese rommunity as valuable element in the life of the Colony, and said that the development of the Club de Recreio, from small beginnings, was symbolic of the growth of Kowloon, since his own knowledge of it from a settlement like Repulse Bay to a great city rivalling Victoria on the other side of the Harbour. The growth of Kowloon is well illustrated by the growth of the Chib de Recreio, which began in small way in 1903 with 19 mem- bers: but in months the mem- hership of the Club had doubled, and it now has 230 members. This increase is chiefly due to the fact that the majority of this Colony's Portuguese community now resides," not in Hong Kong, but in Kow- loon. The President of the Club, Mr. E. V. M. R. de Souza, then gave sa interesting review of the growth of the Club. He said: We are assembled today under the roof of an institution which had a very humble, and somewhat unorthodox beginning.
