The British trade route to the East has often been discussed in the past. It is an attractive sub: ject. There is, a certain historical glamour about the old way round the Cape, with the China clippers beating up the west coast of Africa in sunshine and storm, in the race for England with the first of the Reason's cargoes of ten.
For the rest all that need be said is that an alternative sea route för shipping is only one of many new" problems that have been suggested by the submarine menace in the war,
Lancashire Cotton Troubles. The Lancashire cotton spinners seem to be bitten with the notion that the way to rehabilitate the industry is to cut down wages and lengthen hours of labour. This in short is what the employers have just put forward, though I may say that nobody believes that the pro- posal will be submitted seriously to the operatives. The chief interest in the fact is that it discloses the state of mind of the people at the bend of affairs. In London there is disposition to laugh at the idea, and is is meeting with a certain amount of ridicule in the Press.

BOTLS.
In the meantime Mr. Baldwin is warning his supporters that they must bear steadfastly in mind that a General Election is looming ahead. His warning is having effect The Conservatives are enthusiastic, and are mobilising their forces in order to defeat the Socialist proposal for a surtax-a special tax on incomes of £500 a year and over. The fact is being driven home that the effect of such an imposition would be to make things more difficult for Capital, and in that way reduce the chances of employment for those who are out of work.
The surtax is seductive pro posal, designed to tatch votes among the working classes, and its eril effects are being exposed by the Conservative Party in the country. But it is a big task to drive home the facts.
