EERIE DANCES AT A MONASTERY.

SHOOTING 21,000 FEET UP.

One of the most remarkable shoot- ing expeditions in which a woman has taken part has just been safely accomplished by Lieut-Colonel S. Gordon Johnson, late of the South taffordshire Regiment, and his wife.

||

They have returned to London after a journey of 1.200 miles from Kashmir to Tibet and back across the Himalayas and other mountain

ranges.

Colonel and Mrs. Johnson, who were accompanied by a native ser vants, 10 transport men with 15 xuks, a herd of sheep for food, and a herd of gonts to provide milk, secured a Tibetan antilope at a height of 21,000 feet-six times the height of Snowden where the, air

was so rarefed that men had to rest from the exertion" of putting on a cost,

240 Miles And No Village. Col. Johnson told a Daily Mail

reporter:

My wife and I made the journey, which totalled 2,000 miles from the time we left Kash mir on May 4th is we returned on November 4th, because we are both enthusiastic shots.

PRISONER'S STORY OF A CHEQUE.

INQUIRY TO JE ZELD

The Common Serjeant. Sir Henty Dickens, K.C., informed a jury at the Old Bailey that he and

decided to take action so that an

inquiry would be made into allega tions concerning the professional conduct of a barrister, Mr. A. W. | Sells.

Mr. Sells, who was not present when the accusations were made against him, had represented at the preliminary police-court proceed- ings a 77-years old prisoner, named Jamen Montgomery,, described as a solicitor, who was charged with modulent conversion. After" a trial lasting four days Montgomery was found guilty last night and sentence was postponed until to day.

It was with reference to an at heged incident described by Mont- gomery in the witness-box that the Common Serjeant, who referred to as a worse than lamentable episode," declared that an inquiry would be held.

Prison Visit

Montgomery's statement was to the effect that he had been visited in prison by Mr. Sells, to whom he gave a cheque for £30 so that the money could be paid to arwoman Leaving Brinagar, the capital who had entrusted it to him and

"Crossed the of Kashmir, w

who was now prosecuting him for Himalayae at Zogi: Pass (11,500 having used the sum an ts own feed). We went 340 miles without

behalf. That, Montgomery Mored, socing a village, and arrived at had not been dom Leh, the chief vinge in the Ladak Range

Leh, which sees perhaps 25 Europeans in a year, is a mar- ket of barzer between India and Kashmir on the one hand and Chinese Turkestan on the other.

Dance Of The Black Hat Thirty miles from Leh is the monastery of Hemie, where we festival attended the annual

which attracte people from all Grotesque over Central Asis.

During the festival you could go to see the Shushak, who might be called the Archbishop. He is supposed to be the reincarnation of Buddha When dying the Shushak has to call the lemmas. the high priests, and tell them where to find the newly born in- fant whom he knows, on the in- spiration of Buddha, must be his When the baby is found it is placed in the monas- tery,

SUCCESHOT.

The women wear head-dresses that go down their backs and bear turquoises.

Maa Johnson, who bought splen did specimene of turquoises for le than a pound in rupees, point- ed out that these stones, carried on the head-dress, were the bank- ing accounts of the women.

back in a line that went within 25 miles of Leh again and thence up the Indus, a march sometimes over great stones, Borges great enow-felds, and at heights where the roots of stunted plants were the only fuel.

Colonel Johnson said:-

We encountered a mow-field at 18,000 feet into which my wife sank almost to the shoulders. When I went to help her I sank just as deep, and soon all our transport was im It took us from 8.30 am to 2 p.m." to get out of the snow-field, in which. we moved less than half a mile. We had to take the loads off the animals and tug them by the heads and tails, and thus gradually get them out.

Colonel Johnson and his wife in- tend to plan another shooting ex- pedition." Three white women have reached the Chang. Chen valley, but it is believed that no woman

Speaking very slowly and grave the Common Serjeant said to

thic jury:

There must be an inquiry about Montgomery's story conosrning what took place between himself and member of the Bar- member of an upright and honourable profession.

You may rest assured that this worse than lamentable episode is not going to remain where it is. There will be an independent in quiry, and at that inquiry this counsel. Mr. Sells, will be able to give any explanation, he may have to give, as he has not been here and cannot be here as a wit- ness to answer for bamse!!.

"T

It is unfair that I should draw any inference, adverse or in his favour. "While I was in prison." Montgomery says, asked Sells to come and see me. I gave him a cheque for £30, payable to himself or order. did it for the reation that Sells told me that if I gave him cheque for £30 be could get the cace stopped by the judge."

Repayment No Answer,

I do not agree with that obser. vation in any way whatsoever (the Common Serjeant contina ed). If the man (Montgomery). had made up his mind to swindle this woman out of £30, it is not an answer to return the money. But it is not bad advice, be cause if the poor woman for whom Montgomery Bays the money was intended had had it returned to her, I might take that fact into consideration when it came to a question of punish *ment.

But Montgomery says that he gare Sells that cheque for £30; and that it has been endorsed by Seks, and has been paid by the bank, to the bearer

The inference in the absence of any explanation, must be that that money went into Sella's pos ket. Ho. may have an answer, and I don't judge him in his

absence

ap-

It is said that this counsel peared for the prisoner, at the police court and perhaps took the money to pay himself his fee. In order that there may be no mistake I put the question direct bo Montgomery He said "A his (Sells') request I gave him £30 to pay this woman if neces sary. I never authorised him to Lake any of that pay his foen.

Counsel are not allowed, how. ever to make bargains with men in gaol, It would be no excuse to say: "I paid myself out of

A committee will inquire into the matter," Sir, Henry concluded. I can only hope that this mer: has penetrated so far into it as bez of the Bar will have some Mrs. JohnsonDA

answer to it. I feave it there”
