The Tribunal had a very stiff job to dreide between the various in-

teresta concerned, but on, the whole it must be conceded that the work has been done very well indeed. The railways "are entitled to get more as pubïc carriers, but if the new scale should produce a bigger revenue than is anticipated under what is called the "standard re- vanae," the surplus de to be dis tributed between the companies and the public. The former will retain 90 per cent., and the latter will receive 80 per cent, which will be applied to the reduction of rates and charges.

Position Of Stockholders."- It has to be borne in mind that a great many people invested their Farmgs in railways. In the brave days before the war railway stock was regarded as a giltedged security. But in recent years the return has been very mengre. Last year's revenue made up some of the ground lost owing to the General Strike, which was promoted with

a

reckless disregard, of conke quences, but there is still room for improvement. If railway bares rise as a result of the Zew scale sanctioned by the Railway Rates Tribunal it will by quite in nc- cordance with the fitness of things and an act of justice. It wil: beln to compensate those who hid i vestments that were made when shares were much higher than they are today.

Mother's Departure. Last month Prince Vikram Singh, after quarrels with his father, fled from the city of Dewas and arrived at the British Residency in Indore,

miles away, in a state of great agitation. It is now stated that his misfortunes are largely attributed to the machinations of a former dan ging girl, who has supplanted his mother in the affections of the Maharaja and is alleged to hold great influence over him.

The Prince's mother is a sister of the Maharaja of Kolhapur; bat she left Dewas several years ago, and no subject of Kalpur Badace been permitted to enter DewaL

Wife Molested.

There has been a systematic per«- secution of the Prince, who is not yet 20, and his beautiful wife, the daughter of the Chief of the State of Jath, whom he married last year. Owing to molestation the Princes recently returned to her father.

To mark the Maharaja's displen. sure the Prince was deprived of his rank in the Dewas army and was confined to his house as a prisoner. Fearing attempts on his life by poison, the Prince. on the pretext of going for a motor-ear drive, made a dash across the State border and placed himself under the protection
