KWANTI STEEPLECHASE MEETING.
THRILLING FINISHES AND GOOD DIVIDENDS
The China New Year Meeting at Kwanti on Saturday after- noon was well attended and the fare provided was excellent. The. racing improves at every Meeting ns, the fields are getting bigger anil the, ponies are jumping well the result, being few refusals or spills.
Those present included H.E. Major-General Luard, C.B., C.MG.. Mrs. D. G. M. Bernard, Mrs, R. J. Paterson, Mr. and Mrs. J.-J. Pater- son, Licat:-Col. 'Comyn and Mrs. Corm, Comdr. Hartford, R., and Mrs. Hartford, and Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Muckie.
The Gunners dispensed their usual hospitality and the publie re- freshment tent had added tea to their menu which was very accept: as to those who have got the hahit..
were
The Borderers had a good day and were very much in evidence. They had apparently taken advantage of their stay in Camp to train their ponies and their efforts were duly two Col. Comyn won rewarded. races and Mr. Shillington got a third place with his Ace of Spades. The remaining three races divaled between Mr. M. M. Watson, Mr. Usher and Messes Reidy and Stanton. The Hunters Arms gaias andther 3 beer mugs as winners of j races are expected to contribute a pewter mug with the name of the owner, jockey and rnee engraved on it. There were some close finishes "and the Kwanti New Year handi-1 cap was a particularly good race and a compliment, to Mr. Bulteel who understand, was responsible For the weights.
THE RACING.
There was a field of 14 for the first race and I take no credit in selecting San Diego as the winner As he is in a different class to the ponies he was running against. Senater But up a good fight and I was rather surprised see him bent Man-of-War fer second place although he just managed to do so by half a length.
The the second race 13 pocies turned out and Macao Beauty was made the favourite: Interest was sustained throughout the race and the issue was always in doubt." Macao Beauty apparently could not stay the distance and was passed before the last jump by Blotting Paper and James Pigg. The two latter ponies had a thrilling tussic" in the straight ahd Durlacher on Blotting Paper proved the winner of a maguißeent race by a reck from James Pigg with Macan Beauty third.
The big race of the day proved ather a farce as only two panics turned out. "Easter. Uny won as I starter, anticipated. The other Cavinte, was well ridden by Osborne and put up a good performance.
