FIRST AID FOR FLOWERS.
BY A FLORIST, ¦
The lives of cut flowers can be bongthened considerably if those who pick them will take a little trouble in looking after them.

Elective Restoratives" Two wapirin tablets placed at the hottom of in vase in which the are arranged will work marvels in reviving them if they are drooping or likely to die. If this is not at hand, a few drops of salvolatile added to the water will revive them wonderfully, The water should be warm, as this adds still further to the efficacy of the trattment....
Under the hands of those who love and really understand them, flowers undoubtedly respond

The design would be very successful in satin with its grateful stendèrising lines.

In Green Or Brown Vases.
A strange fact, but none the les true, is thut flowers infinitely
prefer to be arranged in grow or brown receptacles. Possibly the green vases lull them into a false belief that they are still growing among the preen" freshness of other plants, while brown is the colour of the motherearth in which they have been reared. Be that as it may, the proven fact remains that they will live longer the closer Nature is copied.
Why Stalks Should Be Cut Under Water.
Fresh water Gould be substituted without fail every day and a little cut off the end of their stalks at the same time. There is a right and a wrong method of snipping the stalks.
The right way is to cut them un- dar water. As soon as the stalk of a flower is cut a certain amount of water then drawn immediately up the stem, which is very benefi cial to the flower. If qul in the wrong way sir is drawn up the stem and works harm.

SALES LORE.
SEEN IN THE SHOPS.
Sal time, and above all this time of the year when most of the shops are holling stock taking sales, offers a very real opportunity to the woman of taste and compara-
tively small means,
But successful shopping during the sales needs even more skill than ordinary buying. It is essentially not a good investment to buy some thing you have no need for simply because it is cheapt int at the ame time there are many things in which might not indulge ordinarily you which can now be purchased adgan tageously and will make a great difference to your wardrobes
The safest plan when bargain hurting is to make a list of every thing you really want, and a second of things you would like to have but can do without; of course both lists depend very much on your purse.
We are especially lucky here in sale time because we can feel mare, that all goods offered are the usual stock of the shop-not manufactur
r throw outs purchased for the sale. Also most business premises here are comparatively small and as the climate, let alone fashian, forbids any long storage of goods, it is essential to clear out the old goods before purchasing new. Thus sales goods here are up to date and fresh.
LANE, CRAWFORD's sale opened this week and there are really re- markable bargains to be found, ercially in the ladies department. Everything new and old has been reduced throughout the store. I saw some really lovely celanese and erêpe de chine undies" some of them samples of single garments of one colour or design, marked very low; charming pyjama xuits for $13.50; nighties for $13.50 and vests and knickers for a few dollars, There are hats of felt, straw and velvet, all new models for $9.50 a few summer frocks from $12.50, and really delightful sik afternoou frocks from. $25.50.
This xal ofers an excellent op portunity for getting sports kit. White cants in serge, gabardines and knitted you, are always useful and are er much reduced. For any one who travelling soon no better opportunity could he found than the present for equip ing herself with suitable garments. We are drawing near the end of OUT cold snaon here, and there remanin in the shops sports suits, wool dresses and eats which must be cleared before the spring goods
arrive.
A large selection of shoes is being offered at amazingly low prices, and I noticed a table of day and evening handbags some of which were ns low as 86 and all of them were chin and fresh.
i
PANELA's sale ends to-morrow and" there are still some excellent har- gains left. Hats, very smart models, from 25.50; jersey coats from 20.50;) full length ones from 819.50; and dresses from 9 are typical. All the new stock has been marked down by 95 per cent

WHITEAWAY's sale was in full swing when I went in the other day, and all the tables and counters were thronged with paper buyers. Up stairs found eretonnes at half price and some wonderful prame, at a 50 per teat. reduction. A new invention is the opera-hat" hat box which folds flat for packing away and is very light to carry.

THE YALE BLUES.
"AMERICANS JUST DANCE."
Say; 1. know. Yate's" colour is blue, but what's this Tale Blues you're all dancing in London ?" an American asked in Englishman the other day.
The Englishman "murmured that he didn't quite know, but that he had heard the dance was aky to the Blues named after the fals lock, and that he himself was going to learn it because-ah, well, every one was dancing it.
These remarks, well reflect the difference วร the English and American attitude to dancing at the present time.
In London it is generally laid down for us what we shall dance and what not. Thus such and such a speed of the metronome, forty- odd bars to the minute, constitutus a slow foxtrot, while fifty-something means a quick foxtrot. And most bands ring the changes on the two.

The Convérantional Element. The fact is, Americans do not dance this or that. They just dare. With them dancing is a medium for.. the exchange of news and viers, a pleasant social function, during which they hold each other at arm's length and argue or diangere, or coneur or expatinte, as the case may be.

ELIZABETH ARDEN, whose smart Sulong ang frequented by the most beautiful woman of the fashionable world, senda these wise suggestions to all women:
Don't mistake the cultivation of loveliness for make up. They are milea apart! It is wisdom, of cuerse, to make subile use of fine voilet nézemaories to sabance and accent the features and the natural colouring. But it is tragio to try to hide blamishes with cosmatics, for each year yua will grow more depen. dent on those artificial menor of sɔncealing the ravages of your unwisdom.
