TO CHEAT AT
CARDS.
WAYS OF THE PROFES- SIONAL SHARPER.
NO REDRESS FOR HIS VICTIM,
Only a brave and exceedingly
clever man will endeavour to earn aving by cheating at cards.
There are, no doubt, still plenty of cardsharpers who "work" the big liners, and their path is usual- ly fairly easy once they have found a complacent victim; for, despite the notices displayed everywhere on board ship, there are still plenty of travellers who believe that they are far too clever to be caught.
Cheating in card clubs is a different and far more difficult Here it means getting matter. money by illegal means, out of a hardened crew of gamblers who are
the always on
look-out sab- consciously for just this sort of thing,

"Falming "A Card.
A device much adopted by the
player "solo" cheating. "palming a card." If he is play- ing poker five cards are dealt to him in the original hand. If there is an ace among them be will, when the time comes for discarding, alip this ace on his knee and only die card two cards. He will then buy in three more cards, as is usual,' cards and sc instead of fibe
be will have six to choose from. The unwanted card is placed on his knee in place of the ace, which he will use in the best way to make his hand a winning one.
•
I actually had experience of & man who did this in an ordinary suburban car club for weeks be fore being detected. The trick was discovered by a suspicious player counting the remainder of the pack and discards after the buy and dis covering that there was one short. A common and easy form of cheating is for all the court carda to have a minute mark in their corners. With a patr of magnify. ing spectacles nearly all sharpers wear glasses these marks can be detected while dealing, if the dealer knows where to look for them. Then the marked card is dealt by the cheat either to himself or to his confederate.
Signalling.
"There is another instance of two coz federates at a game of pokem who would signal to each other the hands they held by stacking their counters in front of them in a cer- tain pre-arranged manner. This form of cheating, without actually interfering with the cards, is of the greatest assistance, in so far as they can tell each other exactly how and when they are going to

It is far easier to cheat. or cut up a player at bridge than at poker. Experts who are playing partners can have a prearranged code by which they can signal to each other just what and how often to call. A cigarette held in the mouth at various angles is a much- used code; one, two, three or four fingers shown at the back of the band when studying the cards dealt to each player is another.

Another prosperous American has n house up the river which he has been carefully stocking with wines for some years past, but he restays there every year and uses his goods. A well-known and very hospitable Philadelphian owns one of the. smaller chateaux on the Loire. Once or twice a year he asks his friends in America to drink a glass of wine with him and provides for that ceremony by taking them across the Atlantic, lodging them at his chateau and conveying them. back to America. It is one of the most Monte Cristo like things of our time.
