Wales was bowled by Miles an over later and the Club were out for 84 after hav. A bad busi- ing had 80 up for "3.
The Christmas Match" began yesterday on the Club ground. Owing no doubt" to the date-the start was not quite punctual but the game was well under way by 11.30 a.m. The Army batted rat andness. were rather at a disadvantage owing to the absence of three of | their side, Graham, Tyringham and Coghill who were detained by their regimental duties until tifa time.
Luckily for them Drysdale and Morris got going for the first wicket. The pitch was not too bad, though Leach was spinning them with so much_top_that__they got up badly At the Law Courts end. Wales also at times whipped off the pitch at

I know of several people who will swear an affidavit that he was caught at the wicket off Leath's first" ball but the um- Pire differed and very properis gave him the benefit of the doubt. Thereafter Morris played excellent Ticket, hitting the ball very hard. Drysdale snicked Leach and the ball

UNUSUAL "SCORING..

A CLOSE FINISH.
Was
some
very curious scoring in the two-day match between the Kowloon CC. and the Navy. During the first day's play, on Saturday the home team made 188, and the Navy, after losing 5 wickets for 3 runs, had increased their score to 28.
Yesterday they' improved their position considerably, Lt. Salter, who had made 9 on Saturday bring. ing his score to 64 before he was bowled. Finally, the Navy were 53 behind on the first innings. Good- win for the K.C.C. had the excel- leat-figures of 3 for 43. -----
The Kowloon second innings open- ed disastrously. Two wickets fell
n tremendous pace. One of them went off Pearce's gloves to Han- for no runs, and six were down
was touched by Morris but it beat not only the batsman but the wicket-keeper for pace. It cost the Club a good deal however, as the pair stopped in steadily together. They made no attempt (very wisely) to force the pace of swing but Morris made a few very hard drives, At 53 Drysdale, was too soon for one of Summers, who had relieved Leach at the Naval Yard end, and was well caught and bowled low down.
Fock-the second catch of this type during the mateb; 5 for 1 wicket. Coghill came in and played nicely and I was surprised to find he had only got 8 not out at the end. He gave one very hard chance to Leach who was bowling and ran across behind mid-off and really did very well to get his left hand to the chance at all just before the finish Morris was yorked by Parker when two short of his half-century and Fogden played out time,
Thus the Army are in a very favourable position as with eight wickets to fall they are 130 runs on. The match will be resumed at
am. to-day.

The Club seemed to feel a lot better after their tiffins and set about the Army bats heartily, Leach and Wales bowled again at their respective ends and shared the remaining eight wickets be- tween them.. Dobbie alone was the 'stumbling block. He played a fine defensive game varied with "an_oe- "casional big hit. Brace took New- bury finely at the wicket soon after the resumption of the game and shortly after Leach bowled Moss and Miles was taken in the slips by Hancock who made a fine catch after the ball had been deflected by the wicket keeper's gloves. Meantime Wales bowled Sergt. Lench and had Coghill well taken at forward square leg by Hammond. Tyringham played a very weak shot to Sayer off Leach and the fields. man made no mistake about the catch. There was still a chance for the Army if Graham would stop with Dobbie but after scoring a single he played a very poor shot off Wales to Leach at short mid-off. Fogden who at times can keep up his end very steadily, never look ed like playing Wales and played on with the score, at 157. Dobbie was undefeated with 68, a good knočk albeit, more restrained than usual, owing no doubt to his injury. He was lucky at times but gave, ng chance that went to hand.
Poor Start By Club," Hayward and Leach went in to face Dobbie (Naval Yard end) and Newbury. Lehch got the former bowler nicely away for four in the first "over but touched the last ball and was smartly taken at first second by Miles. Sayer and Hay- ward were apparently getting going wben Dobbie got in a ball to the former which never rose at all and took the base of the off-stick · In the same over Hayward put one near second slip. Miles dived at
it and knocked it up for Newbury at first slip, to hold:" an amazing bit of work. When Moor tried to put Dobbie to leg and missed the swing and was clean bowled leg stump, things looked black for the Club with 4 down for 30.
The "Old Firm."
Pearce and Hancock started to "put a better complexion on things and by fine cricket took the score to 74 when Sergt. Leach who was howling tice Dobbie got in a ball just similar to the one that bowled Sayer and took the bottom of Han cock's off stump-a practically an- playable ball."
Disaster.
A few runs later, came disaster. Pearce tried to hook a very short ane "from Dobbie but was apparent lyn shade too soon and an easy eatch at square leg resulted. for 83. Then without change in the score Summers cocked" one of Dobbie's up to short mid-off, and Perkor hit all across one from Miles. Abys was run and then Hamilton, who very properly tried to put a half volley from Dobble into the Commodore's vegetable garden did not quite get hold of it.

for 6. Thanks to E. C. Fincher, Goodwin and Lyal, who all scored fast, the score was raised to 193 when the innings was declared with 8 wickets down. It is a doubtful question whether Kowloon did not wait too long before declaring.
The Navy were thus left with 230 to get and about 2 hours in which to get them. The innings opened badly, for Venn called for a very short run to cover point and Salter was run out. The light was already getting bad by this time and there was no question of the Navy getting the runs.
Venn continued to score steadily, though he bad several lives behind the stumps, but the rate of scoring was "undoubtedly slower.
The best stand of the innings was between Shaw and Thomson. Thom- son was the more prominent of the two in fact at one time Shaw could hardly get a ball. When Shaw skied one and was easily. caught there were only about eight minutes to the drawing of stamps and with 2 wickets still to fall, a draw was almost certain.
Both Gardner and Burroughs proved per fectly capable of stopping the dif ficult only and hitting "the bad ones, and, "at the end, the Navy still had two wickets in hand,
The pitch was
playing well.. though there was a spot which Fincher was especially successful in finding, and from this balls were kicking up very quickly. The light was bad towards the end of the game, and even at the beginning of the Navy's second innings it was very dull.
There were many points of in terest in the play, chief of which was the question whether the Navy could save the game. Apart from this, there was an excellent re- covery on each side from a de- moralizing start.
