"The Flag of the Commander-in- Chief Atlantic Fleet will be trans ferred from H.M.S. Revenge to H.M.S. Nelson on October 1st, 1997." So ran the Inconio. Ad- miralty order, and a ship bearing: the name of the great Admiral will once more become a flagship in the Fleet. No more appropriate time or place could have been chosen for the change than Trafalgar Day at Portsmouth Dockyard, where along- side the jetty is moored the Nelson. our latest and greatest battleship, She is by no means a beautiful ship to look at, indeed, some say that she is ugly-but she is the grim' grey embodiment of relentless power. Across the dockyard basins, over the old red-brick buildings rise. the masta and yards of the Victory -bedecked to-day with flags spell- ing out the immortal signal that Nelson made as he joined battle at Trafalgar.

The Victory was laid down 'a year after Nelson was born, was lunched in 1785 and for the past 160 years has been almost continuously a fingahip. Keppel dew his fag in her off Brest. Jervis at St. Vincent, Nelson at Trafalgar, and for the past 100 years she has flown the fag of successive Commanders-ia, Chief at Portsmouth. Now worn out with age and no longer safe afloat, she has been placed perman- ently in dry dock. Her black hull is painted with broad yellow bands along the lines of the gunports, which are picked out in reds and | her masts and yards are once again the same size as those that drove her into action at the greatest- of all naval battle 122 years ago.
