Mr. Wang Ching Wei, who has for long been regarded as one of the most 'extreme of the. Kuomintang leaders, has now. definitely withdrawn from the political arena, and is stated to be at the present moment aboard the Paul Lecat bound fur France. His has been a checkered career ever since his active participation in Kuomintangpolities, when he identified himself with the "Ret" element of the Kuomintang at Hankow, and was hand in glare with Comrade Eugene Chen and other notorious sympathisers of the Soviet's disintegrating doctrines, Chi- nese who know Mr. Wang well say that though he is an extremist in his political theories, he is temperamentally scholarly, of a mild disposition, and very reluctant to expose himself to personal danger. Hence his extraordinary vacillation during the past few months, and lis abrupt departure now that danger once again confronts him. He was and obviously not without cause-believed to be largely responsible for the recent coup that occurred in Cantoh and, indirectly, responsible for the more recent horrors in that unhappy city.

Marshal Fengla troops have been able once again to dislodge the Northerners from that much-distressed city Hauchowfu, and the population of Tsinantu and elsewhere in Shantung are report- ed to be again gravely concerned regarding probable hostilities in "their vicinity,

SHWCHAI, Dec. 19th.

A tense situation has been created in Tsinan, the capital of Shantung, according to A military report received by the Nanking Military Council. The capture of Hsuchow by the Southemers has "consider ably weakened the Northern hold on the Tientsin-Pakow Railway. Taking advantage of this, the plain- clothed, Shansi troops are again very active along the northern section of this milway.

Marsha Feng Yu. Hsiang's main forces will be responsible for the coining "attack on the Shantung troops and the push towards Tai. пап Marshal Feng's reinforce ments for the Lunghai Railway' front are increming.`.

Herr Gessler, the Minister of a speech to the Defence, in Reichsrat defending the proposal to build a new warship, said that it was the Government's view that until progress in world disarmament was made it was its duty to carry out the modest naval programme allowed Germany by the Treaty of Veranilles.

MASTERPIECES MADE-

"INTELLIGIBLE.”

The eloquence of the Archbishop of York (Dr. Lang) and the polish- ed. witticisms of Lord Hugh Cecil were features of a discnesion `at the Church Assembly at Church House, Westminster, on the report of the Cathedrals Commission pub- lished recently.

The Archbishop of York said: Those sto find their own legiance to the Church somewhat perplexed and difficult still and in the cathedrals a most welcome link between themselves and all they most deeply believe."

With respect to literature I am sometimes inclined to wonder if the bishops and higher clergy are illiterate When I talk to then about literature I wonder how they got their degrees.
