Mr. James Hunter, Superinten dent of the Fitting Department of the Gas Co., gave evidence yester day to the effcet "that the meter in the defendant's house had not been registering for the last three years. He also read out from his record of the various fistings sup plied to the defendant at various dates, and alea of the respective rentals charged. Wages in Hawick, a busy little town of 15,000 people, are high, and no skilled operatives are out of work. Indeed, men and women have been imported from York- shire to recruit the Scottish mills.

Gas Too Dear,
As a matter of principle," Mr. Wadeson pointed out to the Court that the Company have three hun- dred employees, and that if they swindled the Company of eight cents a month, it would amount to something big particularly if the fraud was over three years.
