SPORT NOT INJURED.
Speaking at Waltham Abbey in the Epping Division, Mr. Churchill said he was quite impenitent about the Betting Tax.
We are going to get three or four millions this year from it." be added," "and I do not know what great antional interest is going to be injured by that. At any rate we have got three or four million which will almost exactly equal the amount of money which the Government has to provide to establish a universal system of widows' pansions for the whole year. There are ways in which the Incidence of this tax can be made more agreeable to those who are spezially concerned in betting and they will be studied. It is far from my wish to handle any n dustry or class of people in such a way as to injure them in their Times. livelihood. The raising of taxes

I am told that the one class of sporting men who have been affect ed by the tax are the professional backers, that they have found it hard, but so far as sport is con- cerned it has not been injured in the least, because the attendances at the race meetings are excellent in spite of the bad wather. Epsom best all records this year for the Derby, and the prices realized for bloodstock sales have surpassed overy record in every sale that has been held since the imposition of
the tax.

The Yarmouth fishing smacks were invariably soca in those days nestling beneath the grey danks of 25,000-ton battleships, engaged in light badinage or in transactions connected with potatoes and letters from home and beauty, or both. It is a true saying that you never know your friends until adversity raveals them to you; and the Fleet found its friends, suddenly sad unexpectedly, in these wise little taxicabs of the sea, always ready to wheel on a roaring, hissing swell, and do something useful for the big grey ladies.
It seems to me a romance that the Lords of Admiralty, who are not, as a rule, touched by senti- ment or given greatly to generosity, should have decreed their that the battleships and friends in adversity shall not be separated in these times of tem- porary pesce, So you will find that each battleship now has at tached to her for discipline, tions, and every kind of duty a Yarmarth drifter, whose official capacity is that of a maid of all work.
