REDS AND ANTI-REDS FIGHTING FOR CANTON.

TROOPS FROM FATSHAN AND

THE REVOLUTIONARIES PROCLAIM A SOVIET

GOVERNMENT.

SWATOW TROOPS MARCHING ON CANTON,

REFUGEES POUR INTO HONG KONG.

Vory little news of a properly authenticated nature was re- ceived yesterday of the Canton eruption. Our Uhinese dorrepond dent learnt, however, from reliable sources that

The 5th Army Corps, re-interced by detalis of the 4th Army returning from Fatshan and Kongmoon, regalzed control of Canton City from the Reds" late on Sunday night or early Monday morn- Ing, and "Red" terrorists were broken up into gangs of unorganized desperadoes.

་!

Honam, on the South bank of the liver, resisted the Reils throughout and its able and energetic governor, General Li Fuk Lam, led a vigorous attack which resulted in the capture of police headquarters.

A REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT PROCLAIMED.

The Reds claim to have set up a Revolutionary Government on the Soviet principle, and that "the people and soldiers have flocked to their support. They also gave a list of the public offices that they have occupied.

There seems, however, good reason to believe that the forces of (comparative) law and order are holding their own. The usual- Chinese complications are evident even in this crisis, and troops from Kongmoon have the doable task of suppressing the Reds and keeping out the Kwangsi troops who are advancing with all possible spread from Swatow.

CAREFULLY PLANNED?

The immediate causes of the outbreak according to our Chinese Correspondent was the refusal of the Government to release 700 1.

support the political prisoners and to allow the Communists to " anti-Kwangsi movement." The course of events, and the big supply of weapons served out to the insurgents shows that the revolt had been carefully planned. The former boycott pickets, recently dis- possessed of their free quarters and nominally disbanded appear to have been the nucleus upon which the communist leaders relied..

Large numbers of refugees poured into Hong Kong yesterday, « the river steamers being crowded? At 3 a.m. fires were still raging, some said in about fifty pinces, and hordes of armed communists were louting and murdering.

The railway service between the Colony and Canton is, sus pended, but the Steamboat Company had arranged to send up a boat carly this morning and it is hopped run a reduced service, details of which are given below.
