NEW TERRITORIES AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR'S
CONGRATULATIONS.
POSSIBILITIES FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS.
HIGH STANDARD OF THE EXHIBITS.
INTERESTING COMMERCIAL SECTION.
The Arst Agricultural Show to be held in the New Territories was opened yesterday at Tung Ying Hok Po (Lady Ho Tung's Experimental Farm), Sheung Shui, by H.E. the Governor (Sir Cecil Clementi, KCMG), who is patron of the 'Show."
Despite the rain the exhibition proved a success from all points of view though, there is no doubt that had the weather been botter there would have been a larger attendance. As it was there were about 2,000 present, and if it is fine to-day there will probably be an even larger attendance.
The show, in the opinion of the judges, exceeded all expecta tions. The exhibits both for compétition and those not for com- petition were of a very high standard indeed, and the function should prove the first of a long series of such affairs steadily growing in size and importance as the years pass.
The show should certainly give very real encouragement to the development on modern and progressive lines of agriculture in all its varions phases in the New Territories.
H.E the Governor and the Rev. H. R. Wells made very interesting speeches. His Excellency urged New Territories agriculturists to aim at muking the Colony self-supporting in the matter of vegetables, and also suggested that there were many. other profitable crops to be grown there. Special emphasis was laid on the undoubted potentialities for the development of forestry on the bare hills, on the lines on which this is being done in the formerly barren places of Japan and Korea.
The high quality of the exhibits proved a surprise, to everyone and it took the judges over two hours to make their awards. H.E. the Governor's special prize was won by Kam Tain chstrict, and the Hon. Mr. J. Owen Hughes' prize by Lady Ho Tung's Experimental Farm.
The show will again be open to-day. THE OPENING CEREMONY."

shape until Mr. Wells cime to me shortly after my return to Hong Kong and suggested that a Com mittee should be formed to organisé a show of this kind.
Mr. Wells is therefore the printe mover in this matter säd" our thanks are chiefly due to him (applause). Mr. Wells his quite rightly said that this is, not a one nian show, and the co-operation of many men has been necessary to make this exhibition à suCCESS.
Mr. Braga And Lady Ho Tung. A second, enthusiast in the cause' is Mr. Braga (applause). He has not only apparently been the largest contributor in money, but
hns also brought a fund of ideas Then I must mention especially and honourably Lady Ho Tung (appinuse). Lady Ho Tung his cot only been of
grat nasistanes in organising this exhibition, but has given her grounds in which this show is being held, and for many years' past has deeply interested herself in agricul- ture, and especially in ecrcal- culture in the New Territories. I therefore have no hesitation in say- ing that but for the help of Lady Ho Tung' this exhibition could not have been held (applause).
The Whole Committee. When the idea of an exhibition was first suggested to me I inaisted that it must be unofficial, that is to say the organisation must be unófficial and not official; and therefore, although the show had my full co-operation I felt that the committee should be mainly un- official. Nevertheless, I requested, Mr. Fraser, when you so kindly invited him to be your Vice-Patron, to serve, because I felt he might be |"'of assistance to you with his advice.
I well know the paternal interest Mr. Fraser takes in this Territory. (applause.)
We must also thank many officials and I also wish to thank Mr.:
the Green, Superintendent of Botanical and Forestry Depart- ment, because I feel much of the success of the show is due to bim
