AUTUMN STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

RECORD ATTENDANCE..

[Br RAPIER]

It is not surprising that there was a large attendance at Kwanti on Saturday afternoon as the condi

The tions were ideal for racing. weather was warm and the surround- ings most attractive as the Course is situated in one of the most beautiful spots in the New Ter ritories. The distant hills stood out in magnificient relic! against a cloudless sky and the white dotted tents of the Queen's" camp add-) ed to the picturesqueness of the scene while the khaki elad aperta. tors and a few lids in blue gare a .comforting homelike touch to the proceedings.

The presence of many well known people contributed to the success of the gathering and amongst those noticed were Major-General "Luard. C.B., C..G., and his daughter, Col. and Mrs. Comyn and Miss Mahony, Mrs. Bernard, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Paterson, Mrs. J. J. Paterson, Commander and Mrs., Hartford, the Hon. Mr. E. D. C. Wolfe and Mrs. Wolfe," the Hon Mr. W. E L Shenton and Mrs. Shenton, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Fall, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Dunbar and daughter, and Col. and Mrs. Hayley Bell.

The Gunners tent was an oasis much appreciated by their many friends. The dividends were good and the absence of Bookies" was.

THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, MONDAY, DECEMBER 5th, 1927.

Alter fat racing it was a treat to see some really good riding as Chasers can make a tremendous difference by taking their weight off their mounts which two or three of them did with excellent results.

sufficed for punters' requirements.

Of course, it was a bit of a scramble to get money on and the names of the ponies were jumbled up to- gether, but this can be easily remedied by taking a little of the space at present occupied by "the cash sweeps as there is more room there than is needed.

Mr. EL P. White, who has return ed from Shanghai, looking more like his old self, officiated with Mesars, R. J. Peterson and F. Sutton as Judge and Lieut. Col. Hall Brutton acted, as usual, as' Starter.

It is hoped that owners of ponies will support the next Meeting more generously with entries and thus help Dr. Pierce Grove to make the Fanling Hunt an even greater success than is is at present.

Most of the ponies jumped well and the wins, were fairly well divid- ed the first race going to that popular Sportswoman, Mrs. R. J. Paterson, the other events being divided between Messrs. Dyer and Beith, Reidy, Watson and Mac-

THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

1 AND 2ND ROUND RESULTS.

The

first and second rounds divided in the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club Championship yesterday at Fanling were not without their surprises.

T. D. E. Pendered, the only semi- finalist, and incidentally one of the finalists of last year, was knocked out in the first round by L. R. Andrewes, who also disposed of Capt. Erskine in the afternoon, and thus entered the semi-final stage.

There was a good breeze for both the morning and afternoon sailing Murray who will meet An- races, when Mr. C. G. Alabaster dre in the semi-final, beat W (President of the St. George's Ironside and L. C. S. Dodwell: Society) and Mr. D. Templeton (Chieftain of St. Andrew's Society) while R. M.Sunith, who won the led their respective teams. On the Championship in 1921 disposed of morning race St. Andrew's led by Capt. Bloxham and A. E. Eissa 15 points, but in the afternoon race St. George's were five points ahead an, and now meets H. G. Sheldon, of the Scots, so that on the day's who was successful against T. "S. sailing, the Sassenachs, were beaten Whyte Smith and R. Young. by 10 points.

With regard to the bowls match, played on three rinks, the St. Andrew's team won by 8 points, but the issue was in doibt, until nearly the last bead.

Altogether there was an enjoyable, day's sport.

The semi-finals will be played next Sunday, and the final on the following Sunday.

More Better was much fancied for the second race but, succumbed in the home run to James Pigg (Bulteci up) leaving Drake, a poor third... The name James Pigg will' always attract money from those as sociated with bunting,

The third race looked like a gift | for Easter Day as this pony is really a first class hurdler. How- ever, Usher was under the impres- aion that the race was over after the first mile and when he realised his mistake the field were well past him on their way for the second hall of the race and it was too late to follow them. Deerhound was well ahend on the last round in the country when he had the misfor- tune to fall leaving Loch Rannoch to take the lead. Stanton, however. lost no time in mounting and pluckily chased Loch Rannoch Home to be beaten by only three lengths. Skrine on Red Leaves also had a fall but mounted and Anished the Course. That's the spirit

The fourth face saw Loongwa re. fusing to take the inital obstacles. Scooter and Mowgli kopt well to gether and provided a fine race. Mowgli'e Jumping experience told and he won by 4 lengths, Scooter's initial attempt at steeplechasing was very praiseworthy..

Blotting Paper won the last race well ridden by Skrine and register ed the second victory for the M.I. Taree was several lengths away with Yorks coming along in the dis
