TWO BISHOPS ATTACK DR. BARNES.

PUBLIC REPUDIATION OF SERMON CRITICISING

SACRAMENTS.

ENORMOUS INTEREST CREATED

BY THE DISCUSSION-

Two Bishops, the Bishop of London and the Bishop of South- wark, Jost no time is publicly deploring the recent sermon of Dr. Barnes attacking the Sacraments.

The Bishop of Southwark on October 9th lodged a "deliberate and emphatic protest" against Dr. Barnes's assertion that among ourselves there are to-day men and women whose sacramental beliefs are not far from those of the cultured Hin- doo idolator." The belief in the Christian Sacrament is, on the contrary, he stated, neither superstitious nor magical, and finds justification in the New Testament,

The Bishop of London, in an address at Hendon on October. Sth, declared that in answer to many letters he had received he would say at once that "London repudiates the uncalled for at- tacks on one of the great Christian truths." The recent sermon of" Dr. Barnes bad caused very great pain to thousands of Church- people. "
