It is estimated that twenty lives were lost in different parts of the country: Lancashire experienced the full impact. At Lancaster the tidal wave swept over the banks of the river Lune and fooded the hospital, drowning three courageous patients despite the efforts of the nursing staff who saved sixteen.
At Fleetwood, a fishing port on the Lancashire coast, the gale blowing at eighty miles an hour broke down the sea defences and water rushed in torrents down the streets Amprisoning many people in their homes. Four bodies have been recovered.
At Blackpool four water cooling towers 250 feet high were torn down at the power station and the adjoining area was flooded and the town deprived of electric current for several hours.
From all parts of the coast heavy seas and damage to piers and ship ping are reported. The crew of a Scarborough motor fishing boat be lieved to have been lost, were tow- ed to port late last night with the craft damaged after having been blown thirty miles before the gale.
