THE TWO PEOPLES WHO NEVER LAUGH.

LONDON. Oct. 8th.

Dr. Lew just now is very much in the limelight. The Daily News records;-

For the first time in the his tory of the church, a. L'humanau,

Timothy Tintang Lew, Deau of the Faculty of Theology at Yenching University, and one of the leading thinkers of Young China, preached at the City Tem- ple on Sunday. He was a notable- figure in his black gown and scar- let neademic hood, partially covering his long Chinese coat of carthbrown silk, ab ea black silk blouse and figüred skirt of peacock blue. He speaks with recision and a soft yoice, and his English is perfect.

Should. China be left to be: self, to her old religions and philosophies, or should she wake up and build a new mation out of the old order? asked Dr. Lew. This was the problem with which his country was faced. In his opinion, Christianity was going to be the most potent factor in the building up of China's new nation- hood, for China was ready for new ideals. The message of Chi- nese Christians to Great Britain today was: Will you not help us to make the Christian faith better known? Dr. Lew, who was educated at Yale and Colum- bia Universities, is reported to speak seven languages fluently, though he usually lectures in Engish."

China Now Aa England Was. On Monday, Dr. Lew spoke at Eton College before he left Europe for America, where he is to deliver

series of lectures. He published: the apended valedictory article in the Daily News:--

it

"When I have looked at the statue of Cromwell in Palace Yard and at other historical onuments of your fighters for freedom, I have been reminded that representative government is not created in a night. When I see the orderliness of England and its representative government; I think that our Chinese militarism should not disturb us, for has not the present England grown out of the old kingdom, ence ravaged throughout its length and breadth by robber barous 7 I visited many cathedrals and occupied the pal pits of leading churches in Lon- don and-in-the provincial-cities. Everywhere. I was impressed by the earnestness, of purpose in really living out Christianity-and- I often thought what the country would be like if these influences were taken away. Christianity -in-England-is-not-a-dying-but-i-

"I have often marvelled at the very real international outlook of the many bishops and leading Free Churchmen, and also laymen of all denominations, with whom. 1 have been brought into" contact.

No Fear Of Bad Relations. Just prior to sailing. De Lew confessed that he had been much impressed by the good-will express- ed in England towards China. We need not be afraid of bad relations between the two countries,' rand. Ot our weather be said:

It sees to me that Britons never laugh. They only smile, This, indeed, is one of the chief impressions I take away from London after my first visit to England. Ju your tubes and opinibuses, everyone sits very solemnly and seriously; there is no frivolity and that in this serious attitude you are all very much like my own people in China The prosperity in Lon- dou and I say this even after seeing something of your East End-has show me. Your omnibus toaductors were thoughtful and sometimes even motherly, fut I must admit that ane or two seemed as if they had not had their afternoon tea.
