I the report froin Shanghai (emanating from a Japanese soures) is true to the elvet that no fewer than three Generals Generals Sun Chuan Fang, Chang Tsung Chang and Shu Yu Pa- upon whom Marshal Chang, Tio Lin continued, of course, to rely, then a much heavier blow will have been struck the. Fengtienesc, than has yet been struck by the Shanai troops. But the report is o startling (even in Chinese military affairs) that we give it, with the utmost reserve.
Reports to hand of the fighting shows that there has been at one point two days' heavy firing and, to all appearance, the usual attacks and counter-attacks. The Fongtionese report"that they have captured another town and have re-entered Shihchinchuang, for the capture of which Dictator Chang Tso Lin gave his troops thre days to do the job and, subsequently, offered a reward of $30,000 to those that accomplished it.
Important also is the news that Marshal Feng Yu Hsiang. despite the bitter things said at him by certain Shansi prisoners, has inoved his troops in the direction of Southern Chihli to inter cept & rear movement by Shantung troops.
Marshal Chiang Kai Shek, having satisfactorily negotiated the preliminary stages of his latest matrimonial venture, is stated to be re-entering active life in China. His re-appearance on China's sanguinary battlefields will, of course, add further zest to the pro- ceedings, though we doubt if it will make them any the less per- plexing

Sir Leonard Lyle, in an inter- view, attributed the crisis to the beetsugar subsidy, to preference to Dominion sugar and to the, dunj ing of sugar from mid-Europe. He declared it to be unfair competi tion to give white sugar from the Dominions preference, and observed that the Government should give picference to the raw material and not to the finished article.
