Alarmist rumours have been in CANTON circulation in London recently that SINGAPORE the doom of Waterloo Bridge hadTSINGTAU via SWATOW! come. It was whispered bridge could hardly fast thather year, and that it might be necessary to close it to traffic at any moment. The engineer in charge of the work at present proceeding upon the bridge scoffed at such an idea. "We can assure the public that every pazaible care is being taken, he said. "If there were any dan ger of a collapse due to tra strain, the bridge would have been closed long ago."

He admitted that the bridge still continues to siak by infinitesimal degrees "The London County Coun eil would not keep a staff of men employed here and go to the ex- pease of having measurements made every second day unless there were some definite sinkage, but there has been no increase in the rate of sub- sidence since the Royal Commis- sion made its report upon the con- dition of the bridge last December.

"The work is proceeding as well as can be expected from the rough and ready methods employed," the engineer added. "There is cer tainly no need for the bridge to be. closed to trafic. Nor need the
