THEIR USE AND AIM
Many years ago the present writer was organising a collection among children for the Little Folks Convalescent Home. One small boy wrote enclosing a postal order with the following letterne
I am setting you 9/- for the poor children. I earned it by pull- ing out my testh.
The spirit of this youthful here
in nat unique, Childeon are full of pity, full of enthusiasm, full of desize to help the poor and suffer- ing. It is only najessary to appeali to their imaginations and the wann heart of youth overflows in sym pathy
In the East it is more necessary even than at home" to evoke this Spirit of social servien for children.") Their lives are much more artificial. They do not know the delights of} playing in fields of daisies and buttercups or getting on friendly terms village children-or even with dogs, pigs, cows and poultry. They have to be careful not to play, out in the hot sun, they are always under the eye of an amah, they go for prim walks along asphalt paths, they ard waited on by adorn- ing servants. Therefore, the M.C.L. steps in to help the parent who fears the development of spoilt darlings.
The Ministering Children's League the oldest children's Society in the Empire-is world wide in its endeavours, and in Hong Kong it |has taken firm roots. Last year in spite of boycott difficulties is raised 14.000 for distribution among local and home charities. This year it is hoped by means of the Fun The Fair to increase this sum substan- tially.
The Hong Kong Women's Guild. was founded as support, to the M.C.L. It fülfils a double purpose. It strengthens the work of the children by enlisting the interest and membership of their mothers and aunts and sisters and it is a means of bringing all communities together in an effort for the com mon-weal. One of the pleasantest features of the preliminary work for the Fun O' The Fair has been the splendid way in which all commu nities have joined generously in the scheme.
It may be well to remind the public that the M. C. L. has assist el the following charities, in the past:-

French Convent Hospital. Italian, Convent Hospital. Nethersole Hospital.
Ying Wa Girls' School. Baxter Mission.
