THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER `5th, 1927.
The fourth night fate of this sea- son at the Victoria Recreation Club on Saturday night was quite a success, although there was not so large an attendance as on the previous occasion, possibly because

We Must Hold Our Public. Without being in the least pessition. -mistic, our younger "pros." must realise that cricket has many rivals As a game and as an attraction, and this competition is becoming rearly more intense. We must hold our public.
It is not a question of showman- ship, but of sound common sense. We young pidgers must look ahead. The essence of true sport is risk. Ideal cricket does not consist of waiting for the bad ball that a schoolboy could hit to the boun- dary. Bowlers have got to be forced to bowl badly by hitting them off their length. It may be risky, but in the end it pays.
Forcing runs can be achieved without using the bat like a base. ball stick. The general principles a laid down by our couches can still be adhered to. The straight bat is still necessary for the bits in front of the wicket, and foot work alone makes most strokes pos sible.
Youngsters must not be coached natural style if it gets out of a what they are after-runs. With some their faults may prove to be their virtuca.
A good desi has been made out of the fact that I have had no real coaching. but my methods in the main are orthodox. I have watch ed the best; a good eye and a good physique have helped me to put into practice what I have seen c.hers do.
Then, I believe it is a fact that "some of our county secretaries are worried in the matter of Snance: If ecunties are having a thin time Snancially it must not be charged against the weather. "Without serious interference on the part of the weather, I think county games should be finished in three days, and matches should be played with that end in view.
more
A Good Game Wanted. While I think respret should be paid to a county that holds the championship, I believe the man in the street cares little (or loss) which county he is going to see, so long as he is going to see the game at its brightest and best.
Too many counties enter a game with the feeling that if we can't To me it win we won't lose!" seems that this is the way to play inte the hands of the enemy.
A side loses the toss and the bow- lers begin at once to bowl the bats men to sleep. Ball after ball is of irreproachable length always pro- viding that the batsmen will not take a risk.
in
Now if a young bowler really could take a peep into the future he might show far more enterprise. For bowlers too, must take riska. There may be much virtue bowling many maiden overs, but the people who are finding the sinews for our winter wages do not It is the enthusiastic. bowlers who are not afraid of being hit who will take the wic "kets" in good time for a match to be finished, even though the average number of ruas may be exceeded,
