THE NAVAL RAID ON BÏAS BAY:
ANOTHER SHARP LESSON FOR THE PIRATES.
FIFTY HOUSES DESTROYED.
FURTHER WARNING THAT PUNISH-
MENT MAY BE REPEATED.
When the naval raid on Bias Bay took place, following the piracy of the Hop Sang, warnings were posted in the villages: that similar punishment would be meted out again if other. British ships were molested. In conformity with this declared policy the pirate haunts were raided a second time on Thursday immediately it became known that the s.s. Fat Shing had suffer-
ed at the banda of these ruffians.
The procedure was very similar to that of the Arst raid. The objectives worn two villages-Cheung Pai and Fan Lo Kong, which gives its naine to the well-known Fan Lo Kong inlet, where- it was known to the Police that a number of pirates resided. Fap Lo Kong is a village of 10,000 inhabitants. The intention was to destroy the houses of individual pirates rather than to burn whole village. *
:
The raiding party were expected and upon landing at Hoi Chan they were met by some of the Elders of the district. These Elders willingly conducted the Naval forer to Cheung Pai and Fan Lo Kong in which villages, it was admitted, the pirates lived. At the outset, however, they were nervous about point- ing out individual residences and it was not until forty houses had been destroyed on the outskirts of Cheung Pai, and they realised that the Navy were in tarast, that they consented to do as requested. Five houses were then indicated in the village of Cheung,Pai and subsequently five more in Fan Lo Kong, all of which were demolished, making a total of 30 in all.
No opposition of any kind was offered by the Elders when they realised that only the houses of the pirates were to be destroyed. Indeed, as Fat Lo Eong one of the Elders person- ally thanked the Captain Superintendent of Police for the forbear- ante shown in not destroying the whole place. It is interesting to note that the pirates' residences.Mere by far the most substantial structures in the district,
The greatest precautions were taken that no lives should be endangered and that live-stock should be kept out of harm's way. Buildings in the neighbourhood of Joss Houses were not touch- ed. In out of the pirates houses the pirate was found lying dead in his coffin. He had apparently been shot in some quarrel the lay previously. This house was not molested. Warnings were- posted, as before, that if further piracies" occurred the aime .retribution would follow and the landing party then withdrew,
On account of the miles of shallow, muddy water the operation of landing and resembarking a force of 500 men, with necessary, equipment, is a most difficult one, but it was carried through with the greatest efficiency and there was no untoward incident. Aeroplanes hovering overhead assisted in the operations.
The residents in Bias Bay fully expected a raid after the piracy of the Solviken and for several days they all camped on the hillside. On Thursday the villages were again practically desert. ed except for the few Elders. Most of the junks sailed away as soon as they saw the Naval vessels. About ten which remained behind were destroyed.

Canton is, of course, full of rumours as to what lies behind the Government's action. Many think
that it is a move on the part of the Chiang Kai Shek faction to
their leader's return to
power at Canton. The Minister of Finance, Mr. Foo Ying Fun, is a strong adherent of the ex-Ceneralis- sino, but General Li Tsai Hsin's attitude is uncertain. Colour was lent to these reports by the press in Canton, big head lines appear ing in which the masses
