Canton took a holiday on Sunday for the big demonstration arranged by the Government at which its policy was explained at length and the populace received it with

acclamation. More than 10,000 people were present on the Eastern Parade ground when a Government official expounded, that the Govern- ment intended to impose a new surtax in all Maritime Customs Houses in territory under Kuomin tang control. The likin taxes would also be abolished. The support of the people was appealed for and all present seemed to respond. The meeting lasted nearly two hours and then a procession paraded the principal streets of the City. All classes put in a good appearance and the merchants were particularly prominent, though of course, "the
