GIVE THE EMPIRE ITS JUST DUE!

WHY APOLOGISE. FOR ENSURING LAW, ORDER AND COMMERCE IN THE EAST?

[BY SIR SIDNEY LOW.]

Time was when "British "Imperialism was sacrosancti er eriticise it was herny. Now we have gone to the other eD treme, and some public men are apologetic in regard to our policies in China, India and Egypt. Need we adopt this attitude of contrition. In this article, Sir Sidney Low calls attention to the many benefits conferred on the Eastern rates by our adminis tration.

To judge by a good deal of cur rent writing and talking, one might imagine that we British ought to stand in a white sheet of repentance because of our conduct towards the Eastern races.

A Worthy Task. They saw in this the reward of their own arduous toil, and the via, dication of the resolute and forcible methods they sometimes employed.

They took up the White Man's Burden, as Kipling, their literary interpreter and laureate, bas ex- plained:

The ports ye shall not enter

The roads ye shall not tread; Go make them with your living, Go mark them with your dead.

They thought the task worth doing. They had no doubt aa. to the benefits they could confer,

Men like Clive, Hastings, the Lawrences, Canning, Cromer, felt that Western civilisation, with all its faults, was needed by the East.

At times they were too truculent and assertive. But their over-con- fidence was more manly, more soundly justified than the self depreciation which bas Весотде fashionable.
