RECREIO'S JOSS IN FINAL.

LOSES TO" CHINESE BY ONE GAME.

[BY HOLLYWOOD.]

A fitting conclusion to an exceed- ingly interesting season in the "B" Division of the Tennis League marked the final match on, the Hong Kong Cricket Club courts between the Chinese R.C. and the Club de Recreio. A very large crowd turned up to watch the struggle for the shield and was re- warded by seeing the best match this season. The protagonists proved astonishingly equal and after an ever run from start to finish, the Chinese eventually emer- ged winners by the narrowest pos- Bible margin of one game, the scores being 60-40 games in their favour.

Both teams bad weathered the season with tea matches won and one lost. The, Recreio went down to the Chinese who lost to the United Services Recreation Club. The two Clubs were, therefore, equal in points, necessitating a final match for the Shield. In the League, the Chinese had beaten the Portu- guese by 23 games, but the Portu- guese, since the Chinese lost to the: United Services, have been practis-(Nippon): ing assiduously and it was a splendid performance for a team to reduce the margin of 23 games to 1. game only in a month's time.

Taking the whole match, Recreio won six cut of the nine sets. J. Silva and F. Remedios won their three sets and aggregated 21 games. They certainly proved the best pair of the two teams and as they are both young players, much will be expect cd of them in the future. E. A. Noronha and C. Barretto, who are considered the weakest pair of the side' won their set against M. C. Lau and T. C. Iu, while E. de Sousa and F. Ribeiro won two sets. But

perhaps the set that turned the scales-in-favour of the Chinese was the one between Sousa and Ribeiro and F. K. Lau and W. K. Cheung, which resulted in 2 in favour of -the latter.

The Chinese are to be warmly congratulated on their success Never before in previous seasons have they been through such a bard struggle for the Shield and the fruits of victory this time must in- deed be pleasant, and, to say the least, they will remember the fight the Portuguese put up against them, for a long time. By their victory on Saturday the Chinese have won all the three divisions again, it being the second consccu- tive year they have gained this enviable distinction.

J

OTHER MATCHES,

Four matches were played in all. The A Division was concluded "by the decision between the Indians and the United. Services Recreation Clubs, which went to the former.. The latter turned up with short and it was mutually agreed to play two pairs from each side.
