QUESTIONS ABOUT

REVOLUTION.

There were very interesting passages when Mr. John Wheatley, M.P.. Minister of Health in the Socialist Government, was cross- examined at the Court of Session, Edinburgh, during the bearing of his action for damages for alleged

libel.

The defendants, against each of whom he claims 28,000, are Mr. John Maurice Baid Miller, Conser vative candidate in Mr. Wheatley's

division, and Mr. Alexander B.

Anderson, prister and publisher of the Eastern Argus and the Glasgow East End Advertiser.

The question is whether a letter published from Mr. Miller falsely and calumniously represented that Mr. Wheatley was dishonourable and that he had no regard for the sanctity of the oath.

Mr. AM. Mackay, E.C., for Mr. Miller, read over the oath taken by Mr. Wheatley as a Privy Comaillor and as, a magistrate, and asked: Would you say that A man who advocated · revolution with violence"and bloodshed would be unfaithful to that oath 1 Mr. Wheatley: I would.'

Revolution a Practical Policy, At a meeting in London Mr. Wheatley was reported to have said that he was not sure that be was not more revolutionary at that time, when "he was Minister of Health, than three years previous- ly; for all his experience had been that if the capitalist order of society was not quickly overthrown they would overthrow them, the Socialist Government. He hoped he was hastening the day when re volution would be a practical policy."

Many trade unions have not emerged nearly so successfully from the general strike and the coal atoppage as the National Union of Railwaymen, which, acgarding Widow Mr. J. H. Thomas, MP apent £1,500,000 of a balance of 22,000,000 standing to its credit on May 1st last year.

They have lost members, money, and prestige, and some to-day face virtual ruin, although their peel- tion a little more than a year ago was apparently almost impregnable. In some instances even the freehold mortgaged

of the offices has been

to make ends meet, and they a not pay affiliation fees to keep them in membership of the Trades Union Congress or the General Federation of Trade Unions.

But there are indications that the lesson has been learned. Mr. W. A. Appleten, secretary of the General Federation af Trade Uniont, said to a Daily Mait reporter:

A new view-point is developing. There is a change in the sttitude of the average British workman, who is coming to realise the futility of trying to solve ccapomic problems by political action.

He is becoming more concerned with his own trade and the trade
