SHANGHAI. Curfew has killed the much- advertised right life of Shanghai. Though the ban has been lifted, its moral effect remains. Purveyors of champagne and jazz mourn, but many wives rejoice.

The curfew lived. but a little while, and vanished when the Chi- rése eased their foolish antica be- yond the barricades. It was a mild affair at the best, 10 p.m. as the first limit for being outdoors, and an extra two hours borty after the Erst month. No one would have believed that it could so effectually kill the pastime of dancing night- may long in a devil-may-care at- mosphere. Yet the doors are well- zigh empty, and Russian partners (a la. per dance) sit disconsolately after midnight with hardly a enitor to disturb their thoughts of next month's bills

curfew descended

When the Shanghai rebelled like a naughty child, and was punished according- 17. The first night more than 1,200 defant persons-mostly Chinese- were gathered in by patrols. But the die-hards dwindled so rapidly that within ten days the nightly bag was fewer than 100.

country:-

The first full night of freedora found expectant café proprietors entrenched behind barricades of champagne, and extra cashiers in reserve. Now for the deluge! But it never came. Dancers and drin- kers began to "drift homewards at midnight. But you can stay. pleaded the proprietors. *But we want to go home," retorted the patrons.

The Adaptable Chinese, Even the Chinese have fallen into the new habit. By mdnight the streets they largely inhabit are deserted. Ricicaba coolies left high and dry by the lack of late fares wander about forloraly, convinced that the new order of things is no-i other form of oppression by the foreign devil. Yet what they lose after midnight is more than made up earlier in the evening, when sailors and soldiers distribute amall money with incredible generosity,

The Chinese have lost no oppor- tunity, however small, of profiting by the militarisation of Shanghai. We enjoyed the thoroughly Chiness spectacle of one set of coolies put- ting wire up in the day time and others taking down sections of it at night, almost under the eyes of the sentries. No less resourceful were the Chinese householders liv ing on the frontier" street which divides the International Settle- ment from the French Concession, Though the side thoroughfares were sealed with wire and baulks of tim ber, the police discovered that much foot traffic was still passing buck and forth through a barrier that was apparently sealed.

Observation showed that the tenants of houses which had front entrances outside the barrier and back doors within it were admitting pedestrians through their premises at 5 coppers a head-and doing big business.

Contrary to the assertion made by the Third International the national spirit in Russia is grow- ing stronger every day. Certain among the Communists have re- cognised their past errors and will try to redeem them by aiding in the liberation of their country.
