THE EVEN TENOR OF OUR WAYS
June 19th:
Not having had any papers for time of over $30,000 on the year's over two months we are beginning working, was reported at theto wonder if you people in Shang- twenty-sixth ordinary general meet ing of William Powell, Ltd., held at the offices of Messrs, Lane, Cras- ford, Lad., yesterday at noon, was stated that the Joss is due, ns in the case of 1925, to the prevailing conditions.
Mr. M. Manuk (Chairman) pre- sided, and was supported by Messrs. F. M. Crawford, R. L. Bridger and S. J. Jordajo (Directors), and Mr. A. C. Howell (Secretary) while there were also present: Messrs. A. W. Roberta, H. Overy, H. E. Scriven and H. J. Ainslie,
The Chairman's Speech; Addressing the weeting, the CHAIRMAN Baid: -Your Directors. very much regret to have to place before you such an unsatisfactory result for the year's working, but when the conditions prevailing in the Colony are taken into account, and the consequent reduction in the purchasing power of the residents, no other result could be expected. Everything possible has been done conomise in the running of the various departments which, to a griat measure, accounts for the corn- paratively small loss, compared with the heavy reduction in the
EUROOVER.
We are hoping, however, that con- ditions will spon improve and enable us not only to wipe off the debit balance we are now carrying forward, but to pay our usual divibumi.
hai are all right, writes a North China Daily News correspondeut from Somewhere in the Interior. So far as we know Chins must be in a peaceful condition, though we have received several letters from friends in the Homelands and in China which suggest that there are difficulties of several kinda being thet with in this land,'
Here we are going on the eveni tenor of our ways, and paying no attention to outside things except that just occasionally we would like to see a Shanghai paper.
What about this revolution, how is it going on, is there anyone winning or losing, is there much trouble. To send us on a paper be good to see how the rest of the I there is one to spare, as it would world is getting on. As we see things here these Southern troops clear, and if only they can carry have got things worked out fairly them out as they seem to have them worked out on paper, and in soon, and this old land may vet brains, things will take a turn be heard from. I saw in a Swedish paper that some representatives audience in a big gathering from this land had been letting the in U.S. hearing from them in a rather unconventional way, they seem to have the gift of doing so at times.
How To Deal With Communists.
A party called Communists had the audacity to attempt a "Try" on their own account some months; ago bere, and those who were in authority allowed them to carry on for a considerable time. Then one night a friend of mine thought Our business has suffered in commough, so things began to happen
with others that they had gone
fari a with all other similar buat just after midnight and before Bebes in the Colony, and we are morning there were a few leading doing our atmost, as already stated, lights who were living in rather to restuce our overhead expenses and confined quarters, and whose fu- conserve our resources so as to be in a jesition to meet the demands of Such work continued for a few ture looked then very unpleasant. nur customers when conditious in days much to the benefit of the merchants and general public, and A memorial stone placed in a con- now they are I don't know where.. spicuous position in remembrance of the leading Communist who was shot some time ago has been torn dence has been restored, and to up, and broken to pieces, confi- day-the Nationalists are to the front and there seems to be a fair- great fear is that fighting among ly bright future before them, The themselves will again whole thing,

The loss made in 1925 was written off by transferring $32,000 from the General Reserve to the Profit and Loss Account. In the present in stance, however, your Directors consider it advisable to carry for- ward the loss 830,006.60 instead of drawing upon the General Reserve, Qying to a misunderstanding the draft balanen sheet approved by the Auditors was slightly altered, the fast item on the assets side of the balance sheet in the draft read "Profit and Loss Account $30,000.00 odd and this was altered as shown on the halinee sheet before.vin.) Through an oversight the accommis wore printed without submitting the alterntion to the Auditors for their approval and upon their draw- ing the attention of the Directors to the afteration in the wording we undertook to bring it to your notice at this meeting,
Our Auditors point out that the loss is not for the year inasmarh as we brought forward $1,400,00 odidi from the previous year, and while apologising for the overaight, I take this opportunity of stating that the Auditors are in no way responsible for not drawing share- holders attention to the wording of this item in the balance shry. as the draft balance sheet initialled by them correctly described the item. as a debit balance of Profit and Loss Account.
