AMERICANS AT THE COURT.
THE HOME OFFICE BLACK LIST.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
LONDON, June 6th. This year's Derby was run in re- cord time before'n record crowd, and in weather that although over- cust was fine. The victory of Call Boy was popular. The horse was heavily hacked, and for once the bookmakers had to pay out hand somely.
There was an unusually touching scene after the race. The owner of Call Boy, Mr. Frank Curzon, col lapsed on achieving what for him was a life-long ambition. As most
readers know, he is the well-known theatrical proprietor who married Isabel Jay. For some time he has been in poor health, and he went out to lend his horse in with falter ing stopa supported on each side by friends. His face was deadly pale; and as he held out his hand for the white leading reis, Call Boy started Back timidly. But the horse was coaxed into the enclosure, where Mr. Curzon patted him.

HOW THE GAME WILL BE IMPROVED.

To-day.
BRISKER BIDDING,
[DYA MANNING FOSTER.]
Before the Portland Club issued its new code of laws in January 1024 I repeatedly pressed for the introduction of majority bidding, I pointed out that majority bid- ding improves the game, makes bidding brisker, puts all holders of long minor suits on better fight- ing terms, and, if adopted, would bring English Bridge more into line with Bridge as played abroad. The reform has now been accepted by the Portland Club as a result of a conference with other clubs. The law as it stands in the American code reads:
A bid of a greater number of! odd tricks ranks higher than a bid of a lesser number. When two bids are of the same number they rank: No Trumps (highost): Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs (lowest).
The opportunities of bidding long,, powerful minor suits over long major suite are of sufficiently frequent occurrence, to make the change to the American system in teresting.
Scoring Of Honours,
The second point is the decimal system of counting honours. Thus simple honours (3 in one hand or 2 in one hand and 1 in partner's) will score 30 points, four honours (divided) 40, four in one hand 80, five honours (divided) 90, and £ve in one hand 100
The scoring of chicane is to be abolished.
Then the winning owner, almost overcome with emotion, was help, ed into the weighing-in room and given a seat. Congratulations were showered upon him; and when he

It is stated that the result was also sent all over the world in record time, by the Eastern Telegraph Company among other places, to Egypt in 13 seconda, India, Straits Settle-. ments 45, and China 51 seconds. A full nucount of the race by Hoispur in the London Daily Tele- graph appears elsewhere in this issue.]
It is probable that the American law will be adopted which makes a pass out of turn void. The pro- per player bids and the offender may not bid, double, or redouble until the first bid has been overbid or doubled.
