HAVE THE SOUTHERNERS CROSSED

THE YELLOW RIVER?

A local Chinese newspaper reports that representatives of Five Foreign Powers-Britain, United States, France, Italy and Japan- held a meeting at Tientsin on the 4th instant to discuss the ques-

on of reinforcements for North China.

One of the latest telegram's to hand announces that the Borderers are leaving Shanghai to-day for Tientsin.

The Reds" military organization at Haukow have issued a. statement to the effect that the Fengtien troops are about to evacuate Peking. Evidently, the wish was father to the thought, As the Fengtienites have followed with a statement that there is no intention of evacuating the capital.

There still appears to be considerable doubt on which side Shansi's Governor intends to throw in his lot. The Fengtien authorities, we learn, are keeping a sharp eye" on him, as it is recognised that he holds the key position in North China. Should the Southerners get into Chihli or even should they do well in Shantung, it is very probable that Shansi's "Model Governor will speedily come down on the Southern side of the fenge. Meanwhile, it is stated, that it is not officially known whether the Southerners have erosed the Yellow River.
