SHIPPERS AND THE "CLAUSE PARAMOUNT" ON BILLS OF LADING.”

CRY FOR UNIFORMITY.

At a recent meeting of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce, the Tudian Carriage of Goods by Sra Act, 1920, was under discussion. The Erst India. Seetion of the British

Ausocin Federation of Traders' tiny last year called the attention of the Chamber to the situation which has arisen in respect of bille of Inding since the passing of the Act. Both of these organizations took exception to the use by shipping engrabies of what was called

clanse paramount on bills of lading. That clause was stumped acrmas the doctment, and it was to the effect that the bill of lading was subjet to the provisions of the Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea

Act.

The use of it was considered to be an unsatisfactory practice, tend- ing to introduce further condit tions into a deument which had been already criticised on that ac count. The London Chamber and the Federation maintained that a
