COLLISION WITH BOAT AT SHANGHAI
A large British bombing seaplane was almost totally wrecked on Fri- day afternoon after colliding with native boat opposite Jardine's Pootung Wharf, Shanghai.
It appears that the seaplane had just taken off from the river at the side of H.M.S. Argus with the in- tention of proceeding towards the river mouth and after rising 2 feet from the water, the left wing of the plane collided with the mast of a Chinese junk which was pro- eeeding up river.
After striking the junk the sex- plane capsized, the engine which was, of course, hot, becoming in- mersed and accordingly being con- siderably damaged. Launches were immediately sent from H.M.S. Argue and the machine was towed to the ship's side.
The wing of the plane was com pletely emsahed and the total dam- age sustained to the seaplane is estimated at about £4,000. Delicate instruments and radio equipment were ruined.
Considerable difficulty was ex perienced in extricating one of the airmen, whose foot had become_ca- tangled with the machinery. Two of the aeroplane's crew sustained cuts on the head which are for- tunately not serious. The pilot was unhurt.
The damage to the junk is practically negligible
and
estimated at about 8100.
An inquiry was held on Saturday morning on board of H. M.S.” Argui.
