CHRISTABEL PANKHURST-

AS A PROPHET.

EX SUFFRAGETTE FÖRETELLS A "SECOND COMING.”

ONE BETTER THAN HER OLD STUNTS.

الولو

Miss Christabel Pankhurat the pre-war militant suffragette, and, perhaps, one of the cleverest adopts of the day at obtaining personal publicity, has now adopted the role of a prophet. There has been a good deal of that sort of thing lately and Miss Christabel was nover slow to push herself to the front. A contemporary from Home thus describes one of her meetings;

Driving home her remarks with An outstretched band, a slant of the head, and a pointed finger, the former Suffragist leader, Miss Christabel Pankhurst appeared on the De Montfort Hall platform in the capacity of prophet of the early coming of Jesus Christ.

The meeting was held ander the auspices of the Leicester United. Evangelista Council, and the sub- ject of the address was The Remedy for the World's Unrest."

Dressed in black, with a high collar and a large_brimmed hat, Miss Pankhurst dealt with the pre sent world, the unrest, the threats of war, the fears of famine, pestil ence, earthquakes and fears of earthquakes, and declared that the philosophy of the day had changed to become one of pessimism. The world and humanity were standing

atill.

The famous German, Spangler, had suggested what A British authority had suggested in 1913, that Western Civilisation was com- ing to an end. But if our civilisa "tion passed away, what would take its place? Where would it come

from 1

It could not be said for example that ours had failed' and the oppor- tunity might go to the Orient. Civilisation had begun there and having failed, it had passed on.

Votes For Women!

Years ago she used to think that the obtaining of the women's vote. would result in changing the world. But human nature was always the same and everywhere.

She used to think that women could make war impossible. carnet bring myself to that posi- tion now, and I don't know how 1 did bring myself to it then confested Miss Pankhurst amid Jaughter.

The sins of today next came in for Miss Pankhurst's castigation and she at last sat down amid thunderous applause.

Churches Pleaso Take Notel Miss Pankhurst was at it again the following afternoon when sho said:

"If we believe in the Incarna- tion, the Crucifixion, the Resurrec- tion, and Ascension, we must belïove in the Return.” If the Churches were gong to conceal from the world. that Christ Wis coming again, they were going to make atheists of people, not Christians.

People had roted that the King dom of God would come as a result of the working of human instru- destroyed by peace which was a peace was nothing but a very painful trupe.

Gloom.

Mies Pankburst painted a gloomy picture of the world today. False optimism had gone, she saidh, and. political parties and social re- formers were not giving such mes sages of confident hope as they used to; and a wave of pessimism was over the world, which more than ever, before now needed their mes sage of Christ's second coming.

If the second advent was not to be for hundreds and thousands of years, she said, they must give

WORLD PEACE AIM. SIR A CHAMBERLAIN'S WORK

FOR POSTERISY...

In unveiling portrait of Sir Auston Chamberlain, the Foreign Secretary, the Cordwainers' Hall, Cannon Street, E.C., Mr. Baldwin, the Prime Minister, said that Sir Austen found himself now involved in one of the greatest: crises in the East in the world's history. Continuing, "he said:-

By persuasions here and rebuke there, by wise counsel in this place and that, he has gradually got a harmony in Europe-in Western Europe at least that no man three or four years ago would have thought possible.

There has been nothing about this to appeal to the man in the street. Much of the work has been unseen, but the results re- main. That is one of the reasona why the work of the Foreign Sa óretary can only be judged in proper perspective by posterity. It may well be that when Sir Austen's work lies before the his torian to be judged, people will re. coguise that the work he did for his with a view of preserving the peace work directed solely of the world, and to laying firm and strong the foundations of the League of Nations.
