RED CHALLENGE TO CANTON GOVERNMENT.

LIGHTENING GENERAL STRIKE

SUPPRESSED.

SEAMEN'S UNION AND THE HONG KONG BOATS.

THE "FATSHAN'S VOLUNTEER CREW.

ALL QUIET AT CANTON.

A sharp challenge to the present "moderate" Government in Canton in the form of a twenty-four hours lightening general strike ordered by the Canton Labour Council was yesterday, mat with commendable resolution. The strike was called off at 10 am. by order of the Government and the men who had come out obeyed. The Canton Government has consequently gained in prestige among the general populace.

The successful coup d'état last week end was to have been colebrated to-day by a big demonstration, and the Bed controlled Labour Council's move was in the nature of a counter offensive. In Hong Kong the news that this"victory demonstration" had been called off, followed by the non-arrival of the Fatihan, which was due in from Canton at pm, gave rise to many rumours of street fighting and other serious trouble in Canton,

The Fatihan' eventually arrived at Hong Kong at 8 p.m. having been brought down by ·B volunteer crew of men from the K.O.8.B. company at Shameen and some naval ratings, who did the necessary stoking and worked the ship ander direction of the European officers.

appears that shortly before the boats on the Hong Kong-Canton run were due to sail this morning a circular letter wai received by the masters from the Chinese Sea- men's Union. It bore the stamp signature of Ho Loy, the Chairman of the Canton branch, who is now supposed to be hiding in SwaTOW, and read as follows:-

bours'

We have received from the Canton Labour Council this morning & rote, ordering a twenty-four

general strike to be held to-day, as expression of the Canton work- er demand for the liberation of those workers who were ar- rested in the accident of the 15th in and for the re-open- ing of those labour unions which were dissolved or oc cupied by armed forces in the same date.

Therefore we reluctantly ask your permission to let the crew of your ship to have leave for the above-mentioned length of time, and they will resume their work to-morrow as usual. Hop- ing you will give us your possible help in this struggle. The ships officers actually knew

of the strike orders before the men, who appeared very reluctant to obey, and crowded onto the wharf The vessels affected were the Fat shan, the Yuet On, the Tung "Oa, the Kwong Tung and the Pa
