An exceptionally heavy amount of through cargo was registered by. the vessels pasting through Hong Kong during the 24 hours ended at

a. yesterday.

The Colony's imports of general merchandise during the same period declined considerably to only 4,951 tons: These were brought by nine

vessels

Five British steamers were responsible for 2,106 tons. The beac return waa 1,576 tons dis charged by the & Diomed from Liverpool and Singapore..

Freights for ports beyond Hong Kong totalled $1,916 tons. Of these, 21,995 tons were carried by five British steamers. The sa, Diomed headed the list with 10,084 tons, the French vessel Capitame Faure coming second with 9,412 tons

In addition to this, there were also 3,000 tons of fuel oil, 483 tons of raw sugar and 1,826 tons of coal dis charged bore. Another shipment of coal amcurting to 1,400 tons was carried for Canton.

During the period under review there were 19 arrivals and 10 de- partures. The nationalities were: British, Barrivals and a depas tares; American, arrival and I departure: French, S arrivals; Dutch, 1 arrival Japanese, 4 đ rivals and 4 departures; Chinese, 2 arrivals and 2 departures

Most of the steamers which came into port during the 24 hours ended. at 9 am yesterday carried heavy through freights. The as. Diomed had no less than 10,084 tona, and Fulda (Melchers), dus May 31st. the French liner Capitaine Faure | Glentară (Jardine), dus May 1st.

Helenus (Blue Funnel), due June carried 0,412 tons.

Changed His Mind.

A Chinese houseboy thinking that life was not worth the living, made an attempt to drown himself on Monday. He boarded the Morning Star to Kowloon and when the ferry was half way across, he made the plunge.

The alarm was at once raised and the ferry stopped, but by then the would-be-suicide had discovered that a place in

Davy Jones Locker" was not what be wanted. He began to swim towards a sampan. The farry took the man aboard and brought him over to Kowloon,

The .. Honolulu Maru, arriving here yesterday afternoon from Yokohama and Moji, brought dan gerous goods to the Colony, and also for other ports. For local dis S:S. Diomed (British) from charge, there were 14 tons of Liverpool and Singapore, matches, 25 cases pf sulphuric acid, 3.576 tons general for Hong 95 cases of nitric acid and 23 cases Kong and 10,054 to for of hydrochloric acid. For other ports there were 140 tons of matches and 100 cases of sulphuric acid.
