TRAINING.

7. BOYS' INSTRUCTION PERIOD

WITH THE FLEET.

LIFE ABOARD H.M.S. "EMPEROR OF INDIA."

It is a man's job. There is hard work and plenty of it, but the boys are looked after well-mentally, physically, and spiritually. They have a good career in front of them, and facilities for reaching comparatively high ranks in the

service."

An officer of the battkship Emperor of India, thus summarized the effects of the present system of training boys in the Royal Navy Six months ago the Emperor of "India and her sistars-the Iron Duke (now fingship of Rear-Adml. R. "R. C. Backhouse). Benbow, and Marlborough-were detached from the Mediterranean Fleet to form the Training Squadron as an addi- tional squadron in the Atlantic ⚫Fleet.

-There WILL au innovation, for there had never been z training

squadron of modern battledips. In the past there have, it is true, been many training squadrons. One was formed of obsolescent "County" cruisers before the war, and in the days of masts and yards " there was generally a squadron which took boys to more or less distant parts for instruction at sen,

In the Third Battle Squadron the ships have dual duties. In addition to being a training ship, each vessel is performing all the restine

of a fighting ship.

Proportion Of Boys. This is remarkable. Each ship's complement 细 1,100 in raund

figures, and of this number 400 are

boys. This means that the ship is

eleaned and looked after-and the Emperor of India is as smart and clean as any warship afoat--by a crew argely formed of boys who are learning their job.

or

11

It will be readily appreciated that the lads do not get much time for the development of their or

"school, dinary education, apart from

their professional education. Four hours weekly are devoted to school, but the know- ledge imparted is arranged in such

a manner that the boys and silting at a desk and listening to a school master is welcome change from ship duties

Good General Education.

The "school" is regarded more in the nature of a pastime than the drudgery with which most shore boys would consider school at the age of 17.

Therefore they as similate readily, and are capable of answering questions of general, political, geographical, and his torical knowledge that would as- tonish

people. who received secondary education a generation ago.
