MANIFESTO BY THIRTY-TWO
LEADING MEN.
The following statement con- demning the National Christian Council for the policy which it has adopted in the present crisis in China was sent to the North China Daily News last week.
Wa Pei Fu's Campaign"" Messages from Hankow seem to confirm the report that Wu Pei Fn is in command of an allied army that has cleared Honan' of Southern troops and that he is in possession of the Wushengkuan pass, between which and Hankow there are no natural barriers. It is further re lated, however, that a strong "Nationalist" feres, made up af half the available troops in the Wu-Han area has set out to invade Honan and strike at Wu Pei Fu's rear by most circuitous route through Anhui The strength of this army is anid to be 60,000, which is manifestly an exaggeration. It it said to have moved north-east wards to Macheng, then forward in the same direction into Anhui with the Yingchow pass as its objective. From gchow a highway runs north-west to Chowkiskow, whence an invading force might make a dash at Tencheng and cut the Peking-Hankow railway, or move northwards upon Kaffeng.
SACRIFICE.
Work is being started on the plan of isolating the Capitol by de molishing all the buildings erected on the hall once, crowned with the famous Temple of Jupiter, the national sanctuary of ancient Rome. This operation may lead to the discovery of enormous treasure-a under the corner-stone of the great vrat mass of gold and silver, buried temple on June 21st, A.D. 71.
The site of the corner stone was not identified until 1975, two gen- turies after the Caffarelli palace was built on the platform of the
ancient temple. The existence the treasure was unknown until the middle of the 18th century, wher the documentary evidence of its Presence, which leaves no room for doubt, was head in Chapter 63 of the fourth book of Tacitus's
"Histories, discovered in the library of Monte Camino Abbey. Proper Excavation Formerly Impossible.
From time to time the remaina of the temple were explored, but they could never be properly ex- cavated owing to the buildings covering them, especially the Cafarelli palace.
It is certain that this vast treasure house has never been found.

Its architecture was pure Etrus- con, low and heavy, but it was raised on a platform about 100 feet long and 17-wide, in the middle "of a sacred area aurrounded by cliffs on three sides, and accessible only from the fourth by stately stairs.

As its predecessors, the edition includes a complete record of the newspaper, magazines, and periodical publications of Great Britain and Ireland, together with those of the British Dominions and Colonies, and of the principal for eign countries.
Three hundred years later it was reduced to ashes by fire. Its recon- struction was undertaken by Sulla, and finished by Julips Cesar, in 48 B.C.
So sacred was the temple con- sidered that Cæsar and, after him, the Emperor Claudius assended the stairs on their knees.
A second time the temple was burnt to the ground, to be rebuilt by Vespasina în A.D. 17.
Tacitus describing the laying of the corner-atene, states that after the inaugural stone had been drag- ged to the edge of the shaft into which it was to be sunk,
all the magistrates, priests, sena tors, knighta, soldiers and the people murched past the shaft, each dropping into the cavity a votive offering consisting mainly of gold and silver ingots, they came from the mines, not worked by hand."
