Of his pedigree in the stud. book I am, I confess, ignorant.' I strongly suspect however that in some way or other a lineal descend- ant of Ananias and Sapphira must have been mixed up with the line of Titus Oates, and that subsequent- ly the result was crossed with the De Bomont stock. However that may be, the present expert is Fooned with Khai has aptly been
temned the "vermicular" press in Canton. The efforts which drew my attention to him deserve enshrine. ment.
His first notable contribution to the venacious history of modem times appears in an article in the Sun Kwok 'a Po, a Canton paper, of April 8th, 1997. A fair transia- tion runs as follows:-*
Big. Trouble between British Troops in the New Territory Yesterday.
Recently the Imperialists of Great Britain despatched a lot of soldiers to Hong Kong. The actual number has been ascer- tained to be 5,000, odd. Mr. Clementi, the Governor of Hong Kong ordered all these troops to protect the new territory, On the 6th trouble suddenly broke out between the Scottish soldiers and the English sol- diers, and several tens were wounded and killed. On receipt of a report of the affair, the Hong Kong Government was 'much perturbed, and immediate- ly sent men to mediate. As a result, about 90 of the Scottish soldien were ordered to return to "Little Hong Kong." The cause of e affair, according to report, is as follows: It was raining that day; and the Scot tish soldiers, because there were no military matsheds for them to live in, went to the quarters for of the English soldiers shelter from the rain. For want of room the question of cupation" and "position" started the trouble. Investiga- tion shows that the English soldiers belonging to the aris: tocratic class are always un- friendly to the Scottish soldiers For his reason they fought against each other. Since the outbreak of this trouble the " inhabitants of Hong Kong are extremely perturbed....
DC-
We have already reported that a clash occurred on April 8th in the New Territories at Kong Kong between English and Scotch troops. It now appears. that the trouble arose through one hundred and eighty Scot tish troops having been order ed by the Governor of Hong Kong to proceed to the New Territories. On this particular 'day it was raining heavily, and as the troops had no building in which to live, the Scottish com mander approached the com- mander of the English troops with a view to taking over ons building in the barracks in which to quarter his troops. Now the English commander had long held a grudge against the Scots, and consequently refused to hand over the build- ing in question, using bad lang- unge over the matter. The Scottish commander retorted that they were all in service of their Government, and there was consequently an question of class distinction. In the middle of their conversation they start- ed to fght, Seeing this, the soldiers of both sides began to prepare their weapons. The com. mander of the Scottish troops then had his right hand dis- abled, on seeing which the men became very indignant and a clash broke out between both sides and lasted for three hours. The Hong Kong Government then got to hear about it and sent a high official to mediate, after which the trouble cească. Afterwards the Scots Company was moved back to the Hồng: Kong side and "transferred to Shameen, where it is now' quar- tered in the Hong Kong Bank and other places. Sixty Indian troops also accompanied the soldiers in question to Shameen, the Hong Kong Government having obviously sent the Indian contingent to escort the Scots troops. The Indians will short- ly return to Hong Kong, It is ascertained that the casualties or the English side in this affair were eight killed and sixteen wounded, while the Scots had eleven killed and fifteen wounded.
This is very nearly perfect. But I confess I looked wistfully for some reference to a haggis.. I may say that I have made desperate
