LONDON, March 12th. Britons overseas who return to England on leave or to settle down fis retirement will be pleased that efforts are being made to arrest the desecration of the countryside by the unrestricted erection of new buildings, garages, petrol pumpa, service stations, and all the hundred and one structures which follow the extension of popular motoring. A Į body was formed a few months ago under the title of the Society for the Preservation of Rural England. Already, letters "in support of the movement have I hear, poured in | from all parts of the country.

The Society has no powers at law, but like the Society for the Pre servation of Ancient Buildinga it possesses, young as it is, consider. able powers of persuasion when backed by public opinion. As a last- resort it can take an appeal to the Ministry of Health, and recently the intervention of that body which prevented the erection of a petrol station, at Esher is an example of its successful activities.
